Diagnostic Procedures

- Perform On-Board Diagnostic (OBD) system check. See ON-BOARD DIAGNOSTIC (OBD) SYSTEM CHECK under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. After performing OBD system check, go to next step.
- Turn ignition off. Raise drive wheels. Start and operate engine at idle. Disable ASR/TCS system (if equipped). Place transmission in gear. Observe vehicle speedometer. If speedometer indicates a speed, see DIAGNOSTIC AIDS . If speedometer does not indicate a speed, go to next step.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect PCM harness connector. Turn ignition on. Using DVOM, check voltage on vehicle speed circuit. If voltage reading is greater than 9.6 volts, go to step 8. If voltage reading is not greater than 9.6 volts, go to next step.
- Remove instrument cluster. Check continuity of vehicle speed circuit. If continuity exists, go to next step. If continuity does not exist, go to step 6.
- Check continuity of vehicle speed circuit to battery ground. If continuity exists, go to step 7. If continuity does not exist, diagnose instrument cluster. See appropriate INSTRUMENT PANELS article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT.
- Repair open in vehicle speed circuit. After repairs, go to step 10.
- Repair grounded vehicle speed circuit. After repairs, go to step 10.
- Check for poor connections/terminal tension at PCM connector. Repair as necessary. After repairs, go to step 10. If connection or terminal tension is okay, go to next step.
- Replace PCM. Program replacement PCM using required equipment. After replacing PCM, go to next step.
- Using scan tool, select CAPTURE INFO, REVIEW INFO function. If any undiagnosed DTCs are displayed, go to applicable DTC test. If no other DTCs are displayed, system is okay.
