Diagnostic Procedures

- Perform On-Board Diagnostic (OBD) system check. See ON-BOARD DIAGNOSTIC (OBD) SYSTEM CHECK under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. After performing OBD system check, go to next step.
- Check AIR pump fuse. If fuse is okay, go to next step. If fuse is open, go to step 15.
- If DTC P0412 or P0418 is also present, diagnose affected DTC. See DTC P0412: AIR SOLENOID RELAY CONTROL CIRCUIT or DTC P0418: AIR PUMP RELAY CONTROL CIRCUIT . If these DTCs are not present, go to next step.
- Turn ignition on, with engine off. Using scan tool, enable AIR pump. If pump turns on, go to step 9. If AIR pump does not turn on, go to next step.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect AIR pump relay. Turn ignition on, engine off. Using test light connected to ground, probe power supply circuit to relay. If test light illuminates, go to next step. If test light does not illuminate, go to step 19.
- Connect a fused jumper wire between battery positive and AIR pump feed circuit at relay harness connector. If AIR pump turns on, go to step 26. If AIR pump does not turn on, go to next step.
- Leave jumper wire connected. Disconnect AIR pump harness connector. Using test light connected to negative battery terminal, probe AIR pump harness connector terminal "A". If test light illuminates, go to next step. If test light does not illuminate, go to step 20.
- Move test light to AIR pump harness connector terminal "B". If test light illuminates, go to step 29. If test light does not illuminate, go to step 21.
- Disconnect vacuum source from AIR solenoid valve. Connect a vacuum gauge to vacuum source. Start and operate engine at idle. If vacuum is present, go to next step. If vacuum is not present, go to step 25.
- Turn ignition off. Reconnect vacuum hose to AIR solenoid valve. Disconnect vacuum hose to AIR shut-off valve at AIR solenoid valve. Connect a vacuum gauge to AIR solenoid valve port. Start and operate engine at idle. Using scan tool in OUTPUT CONTROLS function, enable AIR system. If engine vacuum is indicated on vacuum gauge, go to next step. If engine vacuum is not indicated on vacuum gauge, go to step 27.
- Turn ignition off. Reconnect vacuum hose to AIR solenoid valve. Disconnect vacuum hose from AIR shut-off valve. Connect vacuum gauge to AIR shut-off supply vacuum hose. Start and operate engine at idle. Using scan tool, enable AIR system. If engine vacuum is indicated on vacuum gauge, go to next step. If engine vacuum is not indicated on vacuum gauge, go to step 25.
- Turn ignition off. Install vacuum hose to AIR shut-off valve. Disconnect AIR supply hose (from AIR pump) at connector, located near left wheelwell. Turn ignition on, with engine off. Using scan tool, enable AIR system. If air is present at shut-off valve supply hose, go to next step. If air is not present at shut-off valve supply hose, go to step 23.
- Connect AIR shut-off valve supply hose. Disconnect both AIR hoses from AIR pipe check valves. Start and operate engine at idle. Using scan tool, enable AIR system. If air is present at both hoses, see DIAGNOSTIC AIDS . If air is not present at both hoses, go to next step.
- Check AIR hoses for restrictions or damage. Repair as necessary. After repairs, go to step 31. If hoses are okay, go to step 28.
- Turn ignition off. Remove AIR pump relay and fuse from underhood fuse/relay block. Disconnect AIR solenoid harness connector. Connect test light to battery voltage and probe AIR pump relay battery feed terminal at harness connector. If test light illuminates, go to step 22. If test light does not illuminate, go to next step.
- Disconnect AIR pump harness connector. Connect test light to battery voltage and probe AIR pump harness connector terminal "A". If test light illuminates, go to step 23. If test light does not illuminate, go to next step.
- Turn ignition off. Reinstall AIR pump fuse, relay and solenoid. Turn ignition on, with engine off. Using scan tool, enable AIR system. Check AIR pump fuse. If fuse blows, go to step 27. If fuse is okay, go to next step.
- Reconnect AIR pump harness connector. Using scan tool, enable AIR pump. Check AIR pump fuse. If fuse blows, go to step 30. If fuse is okay, see DIAGNOSTIC AIDS .
- Repair open circuit between fuse and relay. After repairs, go to step 31.
- Repair open circuit between AIR pump and AIR relay. After repairs, go to step 31.
- Repair faulty ground connection or open ground circuit. After repairs, go to step 31.
- Repair short to ground in ignition feed circuit. After repairs, go to step 31.
- Repair short to ground in circuit between AIR pump relay and AIR pump. After repairs, go to step 31.
- Repair restriction or damage to AIR inlet or outlet hose from AIR pump. After repairs, go to step 31.
- Repair vacuum hose. After repairs, go to step 31.
- Replace AIR pump relay. After replacing relay, go to step 31.
- Replace AIR shut-off valve. After replacing valve, go to step 31.
- Replace AIR solenoid valve. After replacing solenoid valve, go to step 31.
- Check for poor connections at AIR pump connector. Repair as necessary. After repairs, go to step 31. If connections are okay, go to next step.
- Replace AIR pump. After replacing pump, go to next step.
- Using scan tool, select DTC, CLEAR INFO function. Start and warm engine to normal operating temperature. Select DTC, SPECIFIC, then enter this DTC. Operate vehicle within conditions for setting this DTC. If scan tool indicates that this test ran and passed, go to next step. If scan tool does not indicate that this test ran and passed, repeat step 2.
- Using scan tool, select CAPTURE INFO, REVIEW INFO function. If any undiagnosed DTCs are displayed, go to applicable DTC test.
