Diagnostic Procedures

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2000 Pontiac Firebird, 2000 Chevrolet Corvette, and 2000 Chevrolet Camaro. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Perform On-Board Diagnostic (OBD) system check. See ON-BOARD DIAGNOSTIC (OBD) SYSTEM CHECK  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. After performing OBD system check, go to next step.
  2. Start and operate engine at idle. Using scan tool, select ENGINE 2 DATA LIST and monitor MAF sensor frequency display. If MAF sensor value is less than 10 Hz, go to step  4. If MAF sensor value is not less than 10 Hz, go to next step.
  3. Turn ignition on, with engine off. Using scan tool, review FREEZE FRAME and/or FAILURE RECORDS data and note parameters. Turn ignition off for about 15 seconds. Start engine and operate vehicle within conditions required for this diagnostic to run, and as close to conditions recorded in FREEZE FRAME/FAILURE RECORDS as possible. Select DTC function, and then enter this DTC. If scan tool indicates that this test failed this ignition, go to next step. If scan tool does not indicate that this test failed this ignition, see DIAGNOSTIC AIDS .
  4. Check ENG SEN fuse. If fuse is open, go to step  19. If fuse is okay, go to next step.
  5. Turn ignition off. Disconnect MAF sensor harness connector. Turn ignition on, with engine off. Using DVOM, check voltage between MAF signal circuit and battery ground. If voltage reading is about 5 volts, go to next step. If voltage reading is not about 5 volts, go to step  7.
  6. Turn ignition off. Connect a fused jumper wire between ground and MAF sensor signal circuit at harness connector. Start engine. Check for DTCs. If additional DTCs are set, go to step  20. If no additional DTCs are set, go to step  11.
  7. Turn ignition off. Disconnect PCM harness connector. Turn ignition on, with engine off. Using a DVOM, check voltage between ground and MAF sensor signal circuit at PCM harness connector. If voltage reading is present, go to step  14. If voltage reading is not present, go to next step.
  8. Turn ignition off. Using DVOM, check continuity of MAF sensor signal circuit. If continuity does not exist, go to step  15. If continuity exists, go to next step.
  9. Check for continuity of MAF sensor signal circuit to battery ground. If continuity does not exist, go to next step. If continuity exists, go to step  16.
  10. Check for continuity at PCM harness connector between MAF sensor signal circuit and all other circuits at both PCM connectors. If continuity does not exist, go to step  17. If continuity exists, go to step  22.
  11. Using a test light, connect test light between MAF sensor ignition feed and ground circuits at harness connector. If test light illuminates, go to step  13. If test light does not illuminate, go to next step.
  12. Connect test light between battery ground and MAF sensor ignition feed circuit. If test light illuminates, go to step  18. If test light does not illuminate, go to step  19.
  13. Check for poor connection at MAF sensor harness terminals. Repair as necessary. After repairs, go to step  24. If terminals are okay, go to step  21.
  14. Repair short to voltage in MAF sensor signal circuit. After repairs, go to step  24.
  15. Repair open in MAF sensor signal circuit. After repairs, go to step  24.
  16. Repair short to ground in MAF sensor signal circuit. After repairs, go to step  24.
  17. Repair circuits that are shorted together. After repairs, go to step  24.
  18. Repair MAF sensor ground circuit for open. After repairs, go to step  24.
  19. Repair open or grounded ignition feed circuit at MAF sensor. After repairs, go to step  24.
  20. Repair circuits that are shorted together between MAF sensor signal circuit and circuit for which the DTC the set. After repairs, go to step  24.
  21. Replace MAF sensor. After replacing sensor, go to step  24.
  22. Check for poor connection at PCM. Repair as necessary. After repairs, go to step  24. If connection is okay, go to next step.
  23. Replace PCM. Reprogram replacement PCM using required equipment. After replacing PCM, go to next step.
  24. Using scan tool, select DTC, CLEAR INFO. Start and warm engine to normal operating temperature. Select DTC, SPECIFIC, and then enter this DTC. Operate vehicle in within conditions for setting this DTC. If scan tool indicates that this test ran and passed, go to next step. If scan tool does not indicate that this test ran and passed, go to step  2.
  25. Using scan tool, select CAPTURE INFO, REVIEW INFO function. If any undiagnosed DTCs are displayed, go to applicable DTC test. If no undiagnosed DTCs are displayed, system is okay.
