Removal Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Pontiac Firebird and 2002 Chevrolet Camaro. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Install the engine support fixture to the engine. Refer to Engine Support Fixture .
  2. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  3. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. LIFTING AND JACKING THE VEHICLE
  4. Drain the engine oil. Refer to Engine Oil and Oil Filter Replacement .
  5. Remove the right side engine mount (2) to cradle bolts (1).

  6. Remove exhaust crossover. Refer to EXHAUST CROSSOVER PIPE REPLACEMENT .
  7. Remove the right side shock absorber lower mounting bolts.

  8. Remove the intermediate steering shaft bolt from the rack and pinion.

  9. Support the crossmember with suitable support.
  10. Disconnect the oil level sensor electrical connector (1).

    NOTE: Remove the oil level sensor, located in the oil pan, before the oil pan is removed. The sensor may be damaged if the oil pan is removed first.
  11. Remove the oil level sensor from the oil pan.

  12. Remove the starter motor. Refer to STARTER MOTOR (3.8L) .
  13. Remove the right front crossmember bolts.
  14. Remove left engine mount through bolt.

  15. Loosen left crossmember bolts 2 turns.
  16. Lower vehicle and raise the engine with the engine support fixture.
  17. Raise the vehicle. LIFTING AND JACKING THE VEHICLE
  18. Adjust crossmember to gain access to the oil pan.
  19. Remove the oil pan bolts (1).

  20. Hold the oil pan gasket against the engine block while removing the oil pan.
  21. Lower the rear of the oil pan while rotating the pan outward.

    Remove the oil pan (2).

  22. Remove the oil pan gasket.

  23. Clean the oil pan gasket mating surface.
