Installation Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Pontiac Firebird and 2002 Chevrolet Camaro. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Assemble the cylinder head. Refer to CYLINDER HEAD DISASSEMBLE .

    Important:  The arrow on the gasket must point to the front of the engine. Failure to install the gasket properly will cause gasket failure and possible engine damage.

  2. Install the new right cylinder head gasket (3) to the alignment pins (2).

  3. Install the right cylinder head (3).

  4. Tighten the cylinder head bolts following the given sequence.

    Tighten 

    Tighten the cylinder head bolts to 50 N.m (37 lb ft) in sequence shown. Use the J 36660-A to torque the cylinder head bolts an additional 120 degrees.

  5. Install the pushrods and the valve rocker arms. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm and Push Rod Replacement .
  6. Install the right exhaust manifold. Refer to EXHAUST MANIFOLD REPLACEMENT - RIGHT (3.8L) .
  7. Install the lower intake manifold. Refer to Intake Manifold Replacement - Lower .
  8. Refill the engine coolant. Refer to DRAINING AND FILLING COOLING SYSTEM .
  9. Change the engine oil and filter. Refer to Engine Oil and Oil Filter Replacement .
