Removal Procedure

- Remove the drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement .
- Raise and suitably support the vehicle. LIFTING AND JACKING THE VEHICLE
- Remove the starter motor. Refer to STARTER MOTOR (3.8L) .
- If equipped with the M49 manual transmission remove the transmission brace bolts (2, 3).
- Remove the transmission brace (1).
- If equipped with the M49 manual transmission remove the flywheel housing inspection cover bolts (2).
- Remove the flywheel housing inspection cover (3).
- If equipped with the 4L60-E automatic transmission remove the torque converter cover. Refer to TORQUE CONVERTER COVER .
- Use J 37096 in order to hold the flywheel.
- Remove the crankshaft balancer bolt (1) from the balancer (2).
- Remove the crankshaft balancer using the J 38197-A.
- 11.1. Invert J 38197-2 so the leg of the tool is facing away from the crankshaft balancer.
- 11.2. Install the bolts J 38197-4 to the crankshaft balancer.
- 11.3. Remove J 38197-1, J 38197-2, and J 38197-4 from the crankshaft balancer.
- Remove the key from the crankshaft.
