Diagnostic Procedures

  1. Did you perform the Diagnostic System Check-Engine Controls? If yes, go to next step. If no, see DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK - ENGINE CONTROLS  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
  2. Turn ignition on, with engine off. Clear the DTCs with a scan tool. Observe the DTC information with a scan tool for 30 seconds. Did DTC P0036 fail this ignition cycle? If yes, see DTC P0036: HO2S HEATER CONTROL CIRCUIT SENSOR 2 . If no, go to next step.
  3. NOTE: If the engine has just been operating, allow engine to cool until the Heated Oxygen Sensor (HO2S) 2 voltage is stable, or near the bias voltage before proceeding.
  4. Turn ignition on, with engine off. Command the HO2S heater driver 4 on with a scan tool. Monitor the HO2S 2 voltage with a scan tool. Does the HO2S 2 voltage go above or below the previously stabilized voltage by at least 100 mV within 2 minutes? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step  5.
  5. Observe the Freeze Frame/Failure Records for this DTC. Turn off the ignition for 30 seconds. Start the engine. Operate the vehicle within the Conditions For Running DTC. You may also operate the vehicle within the conditions that you observed from the Freeze Frame/Failure Records. Did the DTC fail this ignition cycle? If yes, see INTERMITTENT CONDITIONS  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If no, go to next step.
  6. NOTE: The test light must be connected to a good ground.
  7. Disconnect the HO2S 2 electrical connector. Connect a test light between the HO2S 2 heater ignition 1 voltage circuit, in the engine harness side of the HO2S connector, and a good ground. Turn ignition on, with engine off. Does the test light illuminate? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step  11.
  8. Turn ignition off. Connect a test light between the HO2S 2 heater ignition 1 voltage circuit, and the HO2S 2 heater low control circuit in the engine harness side of the HO2S connector. Turn ignition on, with engine off. Command the HO2S heater driver 4 on with a scan tool. Does the test light illuminate? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step  8.
  9. NOTE: The heater element resistance will vary according to HO2S temperature. A hot HO2S heater element will have a higher resistance than a heater element at room temperature.
  10. Turn ignition off. Leave the HO2S connector disconnected. Allow the engine to cool for at least 15 minutes. Measure the resistance from the heater ignition 1 voltage circuit of the HO2S to the heater low control circuit of the HO2S at the sensor side. Is the resistance 2-20 ohms? If yes, go to step  13. If no, go to step  10.
  11. Test the HO2S 2 low control circuit for an open or high resistance. Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step  14. If no, go to step  10.
  12. Test for an intermittent and/or poor connections at the HO2S 2. Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step  14. If no, go to step  12.
  13. Test for an intermittent and/or poor connections at the PCM. Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step  14. If no, go to step  13.
  14. Repair the open in the HO2S 2 heater ignition 1 voltage circuit. Did you complete the repair? If yes, go to step  14.
  15. Replace the HO2S 2. See HEATED OXYGEN SENSOR under SENSORS in REMOVAL & INSTALLATION - DEVILLE & SEVILLE article. Did you complete the replacement? If yes, go to step  14.
  16. Replace PCM. See POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE under COMPUTERIZED ENGINE CONTROLS in REMOVAL & INSTALLATION - DEVILLE & SEVILLE article. Did you complete the replacement? If yes, go to next step.
  17. Clear the DTCs with a scan tool. Turn off the ignition for 30 seconds. Start the engine and operate vehicle within the Conditions For Running DTC. You may also operate vehicle within the conditions that you observed from the Freeze Frame/Failure Records. Did the DTC fail this ignition cycle? If yes, go to step  2. If no, go to next step.
  18. Observe the Capture Info with a scan tool. Are there any DTCs that have not been diagnosed? If yes, see DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS . If no, system is okay.
