Removal (5.7L)

  1. Perform a pressure test before removing the transmission, if necessary. See PERFORMANCE TESTS in 4L60-E DIAGNOSIS article. This will help to aid in the diagnosis.
  2. Disconnect the Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensor electrical connector. See Fig 2.
  3. Disconnect the Mass Airflow (MAF) sensor electrical connector. See Fig 2.
  4. Remove the air intake duct. See Fig 2.

  5. Remove the transmission fluid level indicator. See Fig 3.
  6. Raise and suitably support the vehicle.
  7. Remove the oxidation catalytic converter.
  8. Unsnap the range selector lever cable from the transmission. See Fig 3
  9. Remove the driveshaft. See PROPELLER SHAFT REPLACEMENT - ONE PIECE and/or PROPELLER SHAFT REPLACEMENT - TWO PIECE .
  10. Support the rear axle with a suitable jack.
  11. Remove the rear axle torque arm from the transmission. See TORQUE ARM REPLACEMENT under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION in REAR SUSPENSION.
  12. Remove the torque converter covers. See TORQUE CONVERTER COVER .
  13. Remove the torque converter bolts. See Figure.
  14. Remove the transmission oil cooler lines. See TRANSMISSION FLUID COOLER HOSE/PIPE under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION in SERVICING - CAMARO & FIREBIRD article.
  15. Remove the wiring harness clamp bolt (1) attaching the clamp to the transmission. See Fig 4.
  16. Disconnect the transmission 20-way electrical connector (2). See Fig 4. Depress both tabs on the connector and pull straight up; do not pry the connector.
  17. Disconnect the vehicle speed sensor electrical connector (3). See Fig 4.
  18. Support the transmission using a transmission jack.
  19. Remove the transmission mount nut. See Figure.
  20. Remove the support bolts and the support from the rail. See Figure.
  21. Remove the floor panel reinforcement, if equipped. See FLOOR PANEL REINFORCEMENT .
  22. Lower the tail section of the transmission slightly.
  23. Remove the transmission-to-engine bolts. See Fig 5.
  24. Separate the transmission from the engine.
  25. Attach Torque Converter Holding Strap (J 21366) to transmission.
  26. Lower the transmission from the vehicle.
  27. Remove the transmission fluid fill tube, if necessary.
