Installation (5.7L)

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Pontiac Firebird and 2002 Chevrolet Camaro. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Install the transmission fluid fill tube, if necessary.
  2. Raise the transmission into the vehicle.
  3. Remove the torque converter holding strap from the transmission.
  4. Align and install the transmission to the engine. See Figure.
  5. Install the transmission bolts and tighten to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
  6. Install the transmission support and bolts to the rail. See Figure. Tighten bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
  7. Install the floor panel reinforcement, if equipped. See FLOOR PANEL REINFORCEMENT .
  8. Remove the transmission jack.
  9. Connect the vehicle speed sensor electrical connector (3). See Figure.
  10. Connect the 20-way electrical connector (2). See Figure.
  11. Install the wiring harness clamp bolt (1) attaching the clamp to the transmission. See Figure. Tighten the wiring harness clamp bolt to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
  12. Install the transmission torque converter bolts. See Figure. Tighten bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
  13. Install the torque converter covers. See TORQUE CONVERTER COVER .
  14. Install the rear axle torque arm. See TORQUE ARM REPLACEMENT under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION in REAR SUSPENSION.
  15. Remove the jack stands supporting rear axle.
  16. Install the driveshaft. See PROPELLER SHAFT REPLACEMENT - ONE PIECE and/or PROPELLER SHAFT REPLACEMENT - TWO PIECE .
  17. Connect the shift cable to the transmission. See Figure.
  18. Install the oxidation catalytic converter.
  19. Lower the vehicle.
  20. Install the transmission fluid level indicator. See Figure.
  21. Install the air intake duct. See Figure.
  22. Connect the IAT sensor electrical connector. See Figure.
  23. Connect the MAF sensor electrical connector. See Figure.
  24. Adjust the shift cable. See SHIFT CONTROL CABLE in SERVICING - CAMARO & FIREBIRD article.
    NOTE: Whenever you remove the transmission for service, you must perform the automatic transmission oil cooler flushing procedure in order to remove the existing fluid which may be contaminated. This will prevent contamination of the new fluid. You must perform the flushing procedure after the installation of the overhauled or replacement transmission.
  25. Flush the transmission oil cooler, oil cooler pipes and the hoses. See OIL COOLER FLUSHING under LUBRICATION in SERVICING - CAMARO & FIREBIRD article.
  26. Install the transmission oil cooler lines. See TRANSMISSION FLUID COOLER HOSE/PIPE under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION in SERVICING - CAMARO & FIREBIRD article.
  27. Fill the transmission with appropriate fluid to proper level. See LUBRICATION in SERVICING - CAMARO & FIREBIRD article.
