Installation (3.8L)

- Raise the transmission into the vehicle.
- Remove the torque converter holding strap from the transmission.
- Align the transmission to the engine.
- Install the transmission fluid fill tube.
- Install the transmission bolts and nuts. Tighten to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
- Install the transmission support and support bolts to the rail. See Figure. Tighten bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
- Install the transmission mount nut and tighten to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
- Remove the transmission jack.
- Connect the vehicle speed sensor electrical connector (1). See Figure.
- Connect the 20-way electrical connector (2). See Figure.
- Install the wiring harness clamp bolt (1) attaching the clamp to the transmission. See Figure.
- Install the torque converter bolts and tighten to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
- Install the torque converter cover. See TORQUE CONVERTER COVER .
- Install the right side engine mount. See ENGINE MOUNTS .
- Install the rear axle torque arm. See TORQUE ARM REPLACEMENT under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION in REAR SUSPENSION.
- Remove the jack stands supporting rear axle.
- Install the driveshaft. See PROPELLER SHAFT REPLACEMENT - ONE PIECE and/or PROPELLER SHAFT REPLACEMENT - TWO PIECE .
- Connect the shift cable to the transmission. See Figure.
- Install the 3 way catalytic converter.
- Lower the vehicle.
- Install the transmission fluid level indicator. See Figure.
- Connect the air intake duct. See Figure.
- Connect the IAT sensor electrical connector. See Figure.
- Check the operation of the shift cable and adjust if necessary.NOTE: Whenever you remove the transmission for service, you must perform the automatic transmission oil cooler flushing procedure in order to remove the existing fluid which may be contaminated. This will prevent contamination of the new fluid. You must perform the flushing procedure after the installation of the overhauled or replacement transmission.
- Flush the transmission oil cooler, oil cooler pipes and the hoses. See OIL COOLER FLUSHING under LUBRICATION in SERVICING - CAMARO & FIREBIRD article.
- Install the transmission oil cooler lines. See TRANSMISSION FLUID COOLER HOSE/PIPE under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION in SERVICING - CAMARO & FIREBIRD article.
- Fill the transmission with appropriate fluid to proper level. See LUBRICATION in SERVICING - CAMARO & FIREBIRD article.
