Diagnostic Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Pontiac Firebird and 2002 Chevrolet Camaro. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. If SIR diagnostic system check has been performed, go to next step. If SIR diagnostic system check has not been performed, go to SIR DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK .
  2. Turn ignition off. Turn ignition on while watching AIR BAG warning light. If AIR BAG warning light flashes 7 times, go to step  4. If AIR BAG warning light does not flash 7 times, go to next step.
  3. Replace Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC). See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Go to step  17.
  4. If AIR BAG warning light goes off after flashing 7 times, go to next step. If AIR BAG warning light does not go off after flashing 7 times, inspect for an intermittent connection in wiring. See WIRING DIAGRAMS .
  5. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC), located under left side of instrument panel, to right of steering column. If scan tool communicates with IPC, go to next step. If scan tool does not communicate with IPC, inspect Class 2 devices for malfunction.
  6. Using scan tool, request SIR DTC display. If IGN1 voltage is greater than 9 volts, go to next step. If IGN1 voltage is 9 volts or less, go to step  8.
  7. If IGN1 voltage is greater than 16 volts, inspect vehicle battery and charging system. If IGN1 voltage is 16 volts or less, go to step  16.
  8. Turn ignition off. Disconnect SDM connector. See Figure. Inspect SDM connector terminals for damage or corrosion. If terminals are okay, go to step  10. If terminals are damaged or corroded, go to next step.
  9. Replace SDM connector. See WIRE REPAIR . Go to step  17.
  10. Remove AIR BAG fuse (15 amp) from instrument panel fuse block, located under left side of instrument panel. Using Digital Multimeter (J-39200), check resistance between AIR BAG fuse holder terminal and SDM harness connector terminal A1. See Figure. Press MIN MAX button on digital multimeter. Connect leads of digital multimeter to appropriate terminals. If low or no resistance is not indicated, go to next step. If low or no resistance is indicated, go to step  12.
  11. Repair open or high resistance in circuit 1139. Go to step  17.
  12. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between AIR BAG fuse holder power-side terminal and ground. If battery voltage exists, go to step  14. If battery voltage does not exist, go to next step.
  13. Repair open or high resistance in power-side feed circuit to AIR BAG fuse. Go to step  17.
  14. Turn ignition off. Check resistance between SDM harness connector terminal A18 and ground. Press MIN MAX button on digital multimeter. Connect leads of digital multimeter to appropriate terminals. If low or no resistance is not indicated, go to next step. If low or no resistance is indicated, go to step  16.
  15. Repair open or high resistance in circuit 1751. Go to step  17.
  16. Replace SDM. See SENSING & DIAGNOSTIC MODULE (SDM)  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Go to next step.
  17. Reconnect all SIR system components. Ensure all components are properly mounted. Go to SIR DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK .
