Diagnostic Procedures

- Did you perform the Diagnostic System Check-Engine Controls? If yes, go to next step. If no, see DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK - ENGINE CONTROLS under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
- Install a scan tool. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF. With a scan tool, monitor the DTC information for DTC 1362 in the PCM. Does the scan tool indicate that DTC 1362 is current? If yes, go to step 6. If no, go to next step.
- Observe the Freeze Frame/Failure Records for this DTC. Turn OFF the ignition for 30 seconds. Start the engine. Operate the vehicle within the Conditions for Running DTC, or within the parameters observed in the Freeze Frame/Failure Records. Does the DTC fail this ignition cycle? If yes, go to next step. If no, see INTERMITTENT CONDITIONS under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
- Turn OFF the ignition. Disconnect the PCM. Turn ON the ignition. Probe the IC timing control circuit with a test lamp connected to ground. Does the test lamp illuminate? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step 14.
- Turn OFF the ignition. Leave the PCM disconnected. Disconnect the ICM connector. Turn ON the ignition. Probe the IC timing control circuit with a test lamp connected to ground. Does the test lamp illuminate? If yes, go to step 10. If no, go to step 13.
- Turn OFF the ignition. Disconnect the PCM. Disconnect the ignition control module. Probe the IC timing control circuit with a test lamp connected to battery voltage. Does the test lamp illuminate? If yes, go to step 11. If no, go to next step.
- Leave the ignition OFF. Leave the PCM disconnected. Leave the ignition control module disconnected. Probe the IC timing signal circuit with a test lamp connected to battery voltage. Does the test lamp illuminate? If yes, go to step 12. If no, go to next step.
- Leave the ignition OFF. Leave the PCM disconnected. Leave the ignition control module disconnected. Test for a short between the IC timing control and IC timing signal circuits. Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step 15. If no, go to next step.
- Leave the ignition OFF. Reconnect the ICM. Leave the PCM disconnected. Turn ON the ignition. Connect a test lamp to battery voltage, and connect the DMM. Observe the voltage between the IC timing control circuit and a known-good ground while probing the IC timing signal circuit with the test lamp. Does the voltage toggle between 20-40 mV and 150-250 mV? If yes, go to step 14. If no, go to step 13.
- Repair the short to voltage in the IC timing control circuit. After repairs, go to step 15.
- Repair the short to ground in the IC timing control circuit. After repairs, go to step 15.
- Repair the short to ground in the IC timing signal circuit. After repairs, go to step 15.
- Replace the ICM. See appropriate REMOVAL, OVERHAUL & INSTALLATION article. After repairs, go to step 15.
- Replace the PCM. See appropriate REMOVAL, OVERHAUL & INSTALLATION article. Reprogram PCM. See POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE under PROGRAMMING. After repairs, go to next step.
- Clear the DTCs with a scan tool. Turn OFF the ignition. Start the engine. Operate the vehicle within the Conditions for Running DTC. Does the DTC run and pass? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step 2.
- Observe the stored information, Capture Info with a scan tool. Does the scan tool display any DTCs that you have not diagnosed? If yes, see DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS . If no, system is okay.
