Diagnostic Procedures

  1. Did you perform the Diagnostic System Check-Engine Controls? If yes, go to next step. If no, see DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK - ENGINE CONTROLS  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
  2. Attempt to start the engine. Does the engine start and run? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step  4.
  3. Turn Off the ignition for 30 seconds. Start the engine. Operate the vehicle within the Conditions for Running DTC. You may also operate the vehicle within the conditions that you observed from the Freeze Frame/Failure Records. Did the DTC fail this ignition cycle? If yes, go to next step. If no, see DIAGNOSTIC AIDS .
  4. NOTE: If voltage measures 0 volts, bump over the engine in order to ensure the CMP sensor magnet is not located under the Camshaft Position (CMP) sensor at the time of the test.
  5. Turn OFF the ignition. Disconnect the PCM. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF. Measure the voltage from the camshaft position signal circuit at the PCM connector to a good ground with a DMM. Is the voltage 4.5-5.5 V? If yes, go to step  8. If no, go to next step.
  6. Does the voltage on the camshaft position signal circuit measure more than 5 V? If yes, go to step  17. If no, go to next step.
  7. Probe the camshaft position signal circuit at the PCM connector with a test lamp that is connected to battery voltage. Does the test lamp illuminate? If yes, go to step  16. If no, go to next step.
  8. Disconnect the Ignition Control Module (ICM). Measure the resistance of the camshaft position signal circuit between the ICM and the PCM with a DMM. Is the resistance 0-5 ohms? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step  15.
  9. NOTE: The magnet used must have sufficient power and the correct polarity. If the voltage remains at 5 volts, retest using the opposite end of the magnet.
  10. Turn OFF the ignition. Remove the CMP sensor from the engine front cover without disconnecting the CMP sensor harness connector. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF. Place a magnet on the CMP sensor. Measure the voltage from the camshaft position signal circuit at the PCM connector to a good ground with a DMM. Does the voltage toggle from 5 volts to 0 volts when the magnet is placed on the sensor? If yes, go to step  25. If no, go to next step.
  11. Turn OFF the ignition. Install the CMP sensor to the engine front cover. Disconnect the CMP sensor. Turn ON the ignition with the engine OFF. Probe the 12-volt reference circuit of the CMP sensor with a test lamp that is connected to a good ground. Does the test lamp illuminate? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step  18.
  12. Turn OFF the ignition. Disconnect the ICM. Measure the resistance of the low reference circuit of the CMP sensor from the CMP connector to the ICM connector with a DMM. Is the resistance 0-5 ohms? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step  19.
  13. Connect the ICM. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF. Measure the voltage from the CMP sensor signal circuit of the CMP sensor to a good ground with a DMM. Is the voltage less than 7 V? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step  22.
  14. Turn OFF the ignition. Disconnect the ICM. Measure the resistance of the CMP sensor signal circuit from the CMP sensor connector to the ICM connector with a DMM. Is the resistance 0-5 ohms? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step  20.
  15. Connect the ICM. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF. Probe the CMP sensor signal circuit of the CMP sensor with a test lamp that is connected to battery voltage. Does the test lamp illuminate? If yes, go to step  21. If no, go to next step.
  16. Connect the ICM. Disconnect the PCM. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF. Momentarily and repeatedly probe the CMP sensor signal circuit with a test lamp that is connected to a good ground. Measure the voltage on the camshaft position signal circuit at the PCM connector to a good ground with a DMM. Does the voltage change when the circuit is touched? If yes, go to step  24. If no, go to step  23.
  17. Repair the camshaft position signal circuit between the ICM and the PCM for an open. Did you complete the repair? After repairs, go to step  31.
  18. Test the camshaft position signal circuit between the ICM and the PCM for a short to ground. Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step  31. If no, go to step  23.
  19. Test the camshaft position signal circuit between the ICM and the PCM for a short to voltage. Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step  31. If no, go to step  23.
  20. Test the CMP 12-volt reference circuit between the CMP sensor and the ICM for an open, a high resistance, or a short to ground. Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step  31. If no, go to step  23.
  21. Repair the CMP low reference circuit between the CMP sensor and the ICM for an open or high resistance. After repairs, go to step  31.
  22. Repair the CMP sensor signal circuit between the CMP sensor and the ICM for an open or high resistance. After repairs, go to step  31.
  23. Test the CMP sensor signal circuit between the CMP sensor and the ICM for a short to ground. Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step  31. If no, go to step  23.
  24. Test the CMP sensor signal circuit between the CMP sensor and the ICM for a short to voltage. Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step  31. If no, go to next step.
  25. Test for an intermittent and for a poor connection at the ICM. Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step  31. If no, go to step  27.
  26. Test for an intermittent and for a poor connection at the CMP sensor. Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step  31. If no, go to step  28.
  27. Test for an intermittent and for a poor connection at the PCM. Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step  31. If no, go to next step.
  28. Install the CMP sensor to the engine front cover. Measure the voltage of the camshaft position signal circuit at the PCM connector to ground with a DMM. Observe the voltage while repeatedly bumping the engine with the starter. Does the voltage toggle from 5 volts to 0 volts while bumping the engine with the starter? If yes, go to step  29. If no, go to step  30.
  29. Replace the ICM. See appropriate REMOVAL, OVERHAUL & INSTALLATION article. After repairs, go to step  31.
  30. Replace the CMP sensor. See appropriate REMOVAL, OVERHAUL & INSTALLATION article. After repairs, go to step  31.
  31. Replace the PCM. See appropriate REMOVAL, OVERHAUL & INSTALLATION article. Reprogram PCM. See POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE  under PROGRAMMING. After repairs, go to step  31.
  32. Replace a faulty or missing CMP sensor magnet on the camshaft sprocket. After repairs, go to next step.
  33. Clear the DTC's with a scan tool. Turn OFF the ignition for 30 seconds. Start the engine. Operate the vehicle within the Conditions for Running DTC. You may also operate the vehicle within the conditions that you observed from the Freeze Frame/Failure Records. Did the DTC fail this ignition cycle? If yes, go to step  2. If no, go to next step.
  34. Observe the stored information, Capture Info with a scan tool. Does the scan tool display any DTCs that you have not diagnosed? If yes, see DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS . If no, system is okay.
