Removal & Installation (3.8L)

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Pontiac Firebird and 2002 Chevrolet Camaro. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Turn ignition off. Disconnect negative battery cable. Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor is located on front of engine, behind crankshaft harmonic balancer. Remove serpentine belt from crankshaft pulley. Raise and support vehicle.
  2. Disconnect starter wiring. Remove starter bolts and starter. Remove flywheel inspection cover. Using a ratchet and Flywheel Holder (J-37096), hold flywheel in place. Remove crankshaft harmonic balancer bolt. Using Balancer Remover (J-38197), remove harmonic balancer.
  3. Remove CKP sensor shield (DO NOT use a pry bar). See Fig 1 . Disconnect CKP sensor harness connector. Remove CKP sensor from engine block.
  4. To install, reverse removal procedure. Lightly lubricate the seal surface of the harmonic balancer with clean engine oil. Apply Thread Sealer (GM 1052080) onto threads of harmonic balancer bolt. Tighten CKP sensor and harmonic balancer bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .
    NOTE: This engine was designed for starter motor mounting without shims. However, if single or double shims have been added to correct a noise or engagement condition, reinstall the shims in their original location to ensure proper pinion-to-flywheel engagement.
  5. Perform CRANKSHAFT POSITION (CKP) SENSOR VARIATION LEARN PROCEDURE. See COMPUTER RELEARN PROCEDURES article in GENERAL INFORMATION.
