Diagnostic Procedures

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Saturn LW200, 2002 Saturn L200, and 2002 Saturn L100. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Start engine and allow ECT to reach at least 176°F (80°C). Using scan tool, perform the following procedure using ENGINE SPEED CONTROL special function while monitoring ENGINE SPEED. Command 1600 RPM and hold for 5 seconds. Command 1000 RPM and hold for 5 seconds. Command 600 RPM and hold for 5 seconds. If ENGINE SPEED matches COMMANDED RPM within 100 RPM, problem is intermittent. See DIAGNOSTIC AIDS  . If ENGINE SPEED does not match COMMANDED RPM within 100 RPM, go to next step.
  2. Let engine return to idle. Disconnect IAC valve. Connect IAC Tester (SA9195E) to IAC valve, then increase and decrease engine speed using tester. If engine speed increases and decreases correctly with IAC tester, go to next step. If engine speed is too fast, check for vacuum leak and correct TP and MAP sensor readings. Inspect throttle stop screw for signs of tampering and linkage for binding or wear. If engine runs okay other than idle, replace IAC motor.
  3. Return engine to idle using IAC tester. Remove IAC tester. Connect test light between each IAC valve connector terminal and ground, while moving throttle plate between idle and wide open throttle. If test light pulses for all but one terminal, go to next step. If test light does not pulse for all but one terminal, turn ignition off. Disconnect PCM connector J2. Check continuity between each IAC circuit at IAC valve connector. Check IAC valve connector. Repair as necessary. If circuits and connector are okay, replace PCM.
  4. If test light is on steady for terminal that did not pulse test light, repair short to voltage in that circuit. If test light is not on steady for terminal that did not pulse, go to next step.
  5. Turn ignition off. Disconnect PCM connector J2. Check continuity to ground on circuit that did not pulse test light at IAC connector. If continuity exists, repair circuit shorted to ground. If continuity does not exist, check circuit for open. If circuit is okay, replace PCM.
