Diagnostic Procedures

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Saturn LW200, 2002 Saturn L200, and 2002 Saturn L100. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Turn ignition on, with engine off. Using scan tool, command FAN CONTROL NO. 1 on and off while monitoring FC 1 RELAY CKT OPEN TO GND and FC 1 RELAY CKT SHORT TO VOLTS. If neither parameter indicates YES, problem is intermittent. See DIAGNOSTIC AIDS  . If either parameter indicates YES, go to next step.
  2. Using scan tool, perform 3 SPEED FAN TEST. If either of the 2 fans works on any speed, go to step  5 . If neither of the 2 fans works on any speed, go to next step.
  3. Check COOL FAN #1 fuse (30-amp). If fuse is open, replace and retest. If fuse continues to open, check for short to ground in White wire or shorted cooling fan No. 1 motor (puller fan). Disconnect cooling fan control module Brown connector. Fan control module is on battery hold down. Connect test light between fan control module Blue connector terminal "B" (White wire) and ground. If test light is on, go to next step. If test light is off, repair open in White wire between fan control module and underhood fuse block.
  4. Connect test light between battery voltage and fan control relay Brown connector terminal "A" (Black wire). If test light is off, repair open in Black wire between fan control module and ground. If test light is on, check cooling fan control module connector. If connector is okay, replace fan control module.
  5. Disconnect cooling fan control module Blue connector. Connect test light between battery voltage and cooling fan control module Blue connector terminal "F" (Dark Green wire). Using scan tool, command FAN CONTROL NO. 1 on and off while monitoring FC 1 RELAY CKT OPEN SHORT TO GND and FC 1 RELAY CKT SHORT TO VOLTS. If either parameter indicates YES, go to next step. If neither parameter indicates YES, check fan control module connector. If connector is okay, replace fan control module.
  6. Connect test light between cooling fan control module Blue connector terminal "F" (Dark Green wire) and ground. If test light is off, go to next step. If test light is on, repair short to voltage in Dark Green wire.
  7. Turn ignition off. Disconnect PCM connector J1. Check continuity between Dark Green wire at fan control module connector and ground. If continuity exists, repair short to ground in Dark Green wire. If continuity does not exist, check for open in Dark Green wire. If wire is okay, replace PCM.
