Diagnostic Procedures

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Saturn LW200, 2002 Saturn L200, and 2002 Saturn L100. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Turn ignition on, engine off. Ensure fuel level is 1.6-12.7 gallons. Remove fuel cap. Using scan tool, monitor FUEL TANK PRESS. SENSOR. If voltage is 2.35-2.85 volts, go to step  3 . If voltage is not 2.35-2.85 volts, go to next step.
  2. If voltage is less than 0.1 volt, see DTC P0452: EVAP FUEL TANK PRESSURE SENSOR CIRCUIT - LOW VOLTAGE  . If voltage is 0.10-2.35 or 2.85-4.90, replace fuel tank pressure senor. If voltage is more than 4.90 volts, see DTC P0453: EVAP FUEL TANK PRESSURE SENSOR CIRCUIT - HIGH VOLTAGE  .
  3. Install fuel cap. Start engine. Using scan tool, perform EVAP SYSTEM PERF special function by commanding a 10 percent duty cycle to the EVAP purge solenoid. Using scan tool, monitor FUEL TANK PRESS. SENSOR while holding engine speed to 3000 RPM. If voltage reaches 1.8 volt or less after 15 seconds, fuel cap was not installed properly or fuel cap is leaking. If voltage does not reach 1.8 volt or less after 15 seconds, go to next step.
  4. Turn ignition on, engine off. Using scan tool, perform EVAP SYSTEM SEAL special function. Connect EVAP Pressure/Purge Diagnostic Cart (J41750-SAT) to EVAP service port. Pressurize system to 30 in. H2O, and then switch to HOLD position. If system reaches 30 in. H2O, vacuum to EVAP system is a problem. Check vacuum hose to EVAP purge solenoid for leaks, plugged EVAP purge throttle solenoid vacuum port and EVAP purge solenoid for a stuck closed valve. If system does not reach 30 in. H2O, use EVAP pressure/purge diagnostic cart and ultrasonic leak detector to locate large leak.
