Test B: Starter Solenoid Clicks, Engine Does Not Crank

- Did you perform the Engine Electrical Diagnostic System Check? If yes, go to step 2 . If no, go to DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK - ENGINE ELECTRICAL under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
- Turn the ignition to the START position. Did the starter solenoid click only one time? If yes, go to step 3
. If no, go to TEST A: STARTER SOLENOID DOES NOT CLICK
.NOTE: Inspect the engine for mechanical failure, or the binding of driven components including driveline related components.
- Inspect the engine and belt drive system for mechanical binding (seized engine, seized generator). Does the engine move freely? If yes, go to step 4 . If no, go to BASIC TROUBLE SHOOTING .
- Test the battery positive cable between the underhood fuse block and starter motor for an open or high resistance. Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step 8 . If no, go to step 5 .
- Test the ground circuit of the starter motor between the battery and the starter motor for a high resistance. Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step 8 . If no, go to step 6 .
- Inspect for poor connections at the starter motor. Refer to INTERMITTENTS OR POOR CONNECTIONS . Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step 8 . If no, go to step 7 .
- Replace the Starter Motor. Refer to STARTER MOTOR (3.8L) or STARTER MOTOR (5.7L) . Did you complete the replacement? If yes, go to step 8 .
- Operate the system in order to verify the repair. Did you correct the condition? If yes, system is OK. If no, go to step 2 .
