Starter Motor (3.8L): Installation

  1. Raise the starter motor in order to install the electrical connections. Install the starter lead and washer. See Figure .
    NOTE: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.
  2. Install the wiring harness starter lead nut. Tighten the wiring harness starter lead nut to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .
  3. Install the positive cable to the starter. See Figure . Install the positive cable nut (at starter solenoid). Tighten the positive cable nut (at starter solenoid) to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .
  4. Raise the starter motor into position.
  5. Install the starter motor bolt and stud. See Figure . Tighten the starter motor bolt and starter motor stud to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .
  6. Install the starter motor shield. Refer to STARTER SHIELD (3.8L)  .
  7. Connect the negative battery cable. Tighten bolt to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .
