Rocker Arms & Push Rods: Installation

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Pontiac Firebird and 2002 Chevrolet Camaro. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: When reusing the valve train components, always install the components to the original location and position. Valve lash is net build, no valve adjustment is required.
  1. Lubricate the valve rocker arms and pushrods with clean engine oil. Lubricate the flange of the valve rocker arm bolts with clean engine oil. Lubricate the flange or washer surface of the bolt that will contact the valve rocker arm. Install the valve rocker arm pivot support. See Figure.
  2. NOTE: Make sure that the pushrods seat properly to the valve lifter sockets. Make sure that the pushrods seat properly to the ends of the rocker arms. DO NOT tighten the rocker arm bolts at this time.
  3. Install the pushrods. Install the rocker arms and bolts. Rotate the crankshaft until the No. 1 piston is at Top Dead Center (TDC) of the compression stroke. See Figure.
  4. In this position, cylinder No. 1 rocker arms will be off lobe lift , and the crankshaft sprocket key will be at the 1:30 position. The engine firing order is 1, 8, 7, 2, 6, 5, 4, 3. Cylinders No. 1, 3, 5, and 7 are left side bank. Cylinders No. 2, 4, 6, and 8 are right side bank.
  5. With the engine in the No. 1 firing position, tighten the following valve rocker arm bolts. See ROCKER ARM TIGHTENING SEQUENCE . See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS 
  6. Rotate the crankshaft 360 degrees. Tighten the following valve rocker arm bolts. See ROCKER ARM TIGHTENING SEQUENCE . See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS 
  7. Install the valve rocker arm covers. See VALVE COVERS .

Cylinder No. 1 (1)
Exhaust 1, 2, 7 & 8
Intake 1, 3, 4 & 5
Cylinder No. 6 (1)
Exhaust 3, 4, 5 & 6
Intake 2, 6, 7 & 8
(1) Piston at TDC of compression stroke.
