Rear Cover: Installation

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Pontiac Firebird and 2002 Chevrolet Camaro. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Apply a 0.20" (5 mm) bead of sealant (GM P/N 12378190), 0.80" (20 mm) long, to the oil pan to the engine block junction.
  2. Install the rear cover gasket and cover. See Figure. Install the rear cover bolts until snug. DO NOT overtighten.
  3. Install the oil pan-to-rear cover bolts until snug. DO NOT overtighten.
  4. Rotate the crankshaft until 2 opposing flywheel bolt holes are parallel to the oil pan surface.
    5. NOTE: The tapered legs of the alignment tool must enter the rear cover oil seal bore.
  5. Install the Rear Cover Alignment Tool (J-41476) and bolts onto the rear of the crankshaft. See Figure. Tighten the alignment tool bolts until snug. DO NOT overtighten. Tighten the oil pan-to-rear cover bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . Tighten the engine rear cover bolts to specification. Remove the alignment tool.
    6. NOTE: DO NOT lubricate the oil seal inside diameter (ID) or the crankshaft surface. DO NOT reuse the crankshaft rear oil seal.
  6. Lubricate the outside diameter (OD) of the oil seal with clean engine oil. DO NOT allow oil or other lubricants to contact the seal surface. Lubricate the rear cover oil seal bore with clean engine oil. DO NOT allow oil or other lubricants to contact the crankshaft surface.
  7. Install the Crankshaft Rear Oil Seal Installer (J-41479) cone and bolts onto the rear of the crankshaft. See Figure. Tighten the bolts until snug. DO NOT overtighten. Install the rear oil seal onto the tapered cone until the tool contacts the oil seal. Thread the oil seal installer threaded rod into the tapered cone until the tool contacts the oil seal. Align the oil seal onto the tool.
  8. Rotate the handle of the installer clockwise until the seal enters the rear cover and bottoms into the cover bore. Remove the installer.
  9. Install the engine flywheel. See FLYWHEEL .
