Oil Pan: Installation

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Pontiac Firebird and 2002 Chevrolet Camaro. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
CAUTION: All gasket surfaces should be free of oil or other foreign material during assembly. The alignment of the structural oil pan is critical. The rear bolt hole locations of the oil pan provide mounting points for the transmission housing. To ensure the rigidity of the powertrain and correct transmission alignment, it is important that the rear of the block and the rear of the oil pan are flush. The rear of the oil pan must NEVER protrude beyond the engine block and transmission housing plane.
  1. Apply a 0.2" (5 mm) bead of sealant (GM P/N 12378190), 0.8" (20 mm) long, to the engine block. Apply the sealant directly onto the tabs of the Front cover gasket that protrude into the oil pan surface.
  2. Apply a 0.2" (5 mm) bead of sealant (GM P/N 12378190), 0.8" (20 mm) long, to the engine block. Apply the sealant directly onto the tabs of the Rear cover gasket that protrude into the oil pan surface.
    3. NOTE: Be sure to align the oil gallery passages in the oil pan and engine block properly with the oil pan gasket.
  3. Pre-assemble the oil pan gasket to the oil pan. Install the gasket onto the pan and install the oil pan bolts to the pan and through the gasket.
  4. Install the oil pan, gasket and bolts to the engine block. See Figure. Tighten the oil pan bolts until snug. DO NOT overtighten. Install the 2 lower transmission housing bolts in order to correctly align the oil pan.
  5. Tighten the lower transmission housing bolts until snug. DO NOT overtighten. Tighten the oil pan-to-block and oil pan-to-front cover bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . Tighten the oil pan-to-rear cover bolts and transmission housing bolts to specification.
  6. Raise the crossmember. Install and tighten the upper 4 crossmember bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . Install and tighten the lower 2 crossmember bolts to specification. Remove the crossmember support.
  7. Install the left side transmission cover and bolt. Tighten bolt to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . Install the right side transmission cover and bolt. Tighten bolt to specification.
  8. Install the oil level sensor to the oil pan (if necessary). See Figure. Tighten the oil level sensor to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . Connect the oil level sensor harness connector. See Figure.
  9. Install the front brake pipes to the retaining clip. Install the front fuel pipe heat shield. Install the front fuel pipe heat shield nuts. Tighten nuts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
  10. If necessary, connect the HO2S harness connectors. See Figure. Connect the left and right side wheel speed sensor harness connectors.
  11. Position the gear to the crossmember. Install the power steering gear bolts and nuts. See Figure. Tighten bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . Position the steering shaft to the gear. Install the intermediate steering shaft and bolt. Tighten bolt to specification.
  12. Install the right and left side shock absorber lower mounting bolts. See Figure. Tighten bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . Install the right and left side sleeves and end links. Install the right and left side end link nuts. Tighten nuts to specification.
  13. Install the left side engine mount bracket bolts. Install the right side engine mount bracket bolts. Tighten the engine mount bracket bolt to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
  14. Install the oil pan drain plug. Tighten plug to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . Install the engine oil filter. See Figure. Tighten filter to specification.
  15. Install the starter motor. See STARTERS - CAMARO & FIREBIRD article in ENGINE.
  16. Lower the vehicle. Remove the engine support fixture.
  17. Remove the caps or plugs from the brake pipes and BPMV. Connect the brake pipes to the BPMV. Tighten pipe fittings to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
  18. Fill the crankcase with the proper quantity and grade of engine oil. Bleed the brakes. See DISC article in BRAKES. Run the engine and check for leaks.
