Removal & Installation: Engine: Removal

- Disconnect the negative battery cable. Disconnect the positive battery cable.
- Recover the air conditioning system. See MANUAL A/C-HEATER SYSTEMS article in HVAC.
- Drain the engine oil.
- Remove the fan shroud. See FAN SHROUD . Remove the upper radiator (inlet) hose and remove the lower radiator (outlet) hose. See RADIATOR HOSES .
- Remove the shift control closeout boot, if equipped with a manual transmission. Remove the front floor console. See FLOOR CONSOLE under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION in SHIFT INTERLOCK SYSTEMS article in TRANSMISSIONS. Remove the control lever handle bolt and handle. Remove the shift control closeout boot bolts and boot.
- Relieve the fuel system pressure. See FUEL PRESSURE RELEASE .
- Remove the Air Conditioning (A/C) compressor and condenser hose bolt at the accumulator. Discard the "O" ring.
- Remove the upper oil cooler line from the radiator. Remove the A/C condenser tube nut. See Fig 1. Remove the condenser tube from the condenser.
- Remove the inlet and outlet heater hoses from the water pump by squeezing the hose clamps together with pliers. Slide the hose clamp away from the water pump fitting and gently twist and pull the heater hose from the water pump fitting.
- Disconnect the fuel line from the fuel rail. See Fig 2. Disconnect the vapor line from the fuel vapor purge valve.
- Remove the cruise control cable from the throttle lever. Remove the accelerator control cable from the throttle lever. Unsnap and remove the accelerator and cruise control cable from the throttle body bracket.
- Remove the secondary Air Injection Reaction (AIR) hose from the AIR shut-off valve. See Fig 3. Remove the brake booster vacuum hose. Remove the front brake lines from the brake pressure modulator valve.
- Disconnect the secondary captured locks. See Fig 4. Disconnect the forward light harness from the engine harness. Disconnect the engine harness vacuum tube from the bottom of the vacuum check valve.
- Disconnect the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) harness connectors. Remove the PCM from the bracket. See POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE under COMPUTERIZED ENGINE CONTROLS in REMOVAL, OVERHAUL & INSTALLATION article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE.
- Remove the right side insulator panel. Remove the retainer from the boss on the heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) module. Remove the push-in retainers from the insulator. Slide the flange on the insulator from the boss on the HVAC module. Unhook the flange on the insulator from over the kick panel. Remove the insulator from the instrument panel.
- Remove the driver side and passenger side hinge pillar trim panels. Remove the hinge pillar trim panel bolts/screws from the panels. Slide the hinge pillar trim panels upward and rearward in order to remove.
- Disconnect the engine wiring harness from the instrument panel wiring harness. See Fig 5. Pull the engine wiring harness through the front of dash. See Fig 6. Lay the engine wire harness on top of the engine.
- Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Remove the lower oil cooler line from the radiator. Remove the front wheels.
- Disconnect ALL oxygen sensor harness connectors. Remove the exhaust crossover pipe. See CROSSOVER PIPE .
- Remove the driver side front fascia air deflector by removing the deflector bolts from the front fascia and the front bumper fascia lower deflector. Remove the deflector from the vehicle.
- Remove the stabilizer bar bracket bolts/stud. Remove the stabilizer bar brackets.
- Remove the wiring harness ground bolt. See Fig 7. Reposition the RF (Radio Frequency) ground strap and cruise control ground lead away from the frame rail.
- Unsnap the automatic transmission range selector lever cable from the range selector lever, if equipped. Remove the automatic transmission range selector lever cable retainer, if equipped. Unsnap the automatic transmission range selector lever cable from the bracket, if equipped.
- If equipped with a manual transmission, use the Hydraulic Clutch Line Separator (J-36221) to depress the White circular release ring on the actuator hose and simultaneously pull lightly on the master cylinder hose to disconnect. Protect both ends from dirt and damage.
- Remove the propeller shaft.
- Remove the torque arm. See appropriate REAR article in SUSPENSION.
- Remove the intermediate steering shaft bolt and shaft from the power steering rack.
- Disconnect the left and right side wheel speed sensor harness connectors.
- Reposition the generator output terminal boot. Remove the battery positive cable nut from the generator output stud. Remove the positive lead from the generator. Remove the starter motor. See STARTERS - CAMARO & FIREBIRD article in ENGINE.
- Remove the right and left side shock absorber lower bolts. Remove the cotter pins and nuts from the left and right side upper ball joints. Using Ball Joint Separator (J-39549), separate the upper control arms from the steering knuckles. See Fig 8. Secure both steering knuckles. See appropriate FRONT article in SUSPENSION.
- Remove the front fuel pipe heat shield nuts. Remove the front fuel pipe heat shield. Open the fuel pipe clip. Unclip the brake lines from the brake pipe clip.
- Position the Engine Support Table (J-39580) below the vehicle. Lower the vehicle until the crossmember is resting on the support table. Secure the vehicle to the hoist.
- Remove the front crossmember bolts. Remove the transmission crossmember bolts. Carefully raise the vehicle off of the engine and transmission assembly. Secure the crossmember to the engine support table.
- Before lifting the engine, remove the ignition coil(s), as required, for the proper fit of the Engine Lift Bracket (J-41798). See REMOVAL, OVERHAUL & INSTALLATION - CAMARO & FIREBIRD article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE. Install the lift bracket to the engine. See Fig 12.
- Install a ratchet with hex-head socket to the drive belt tensioner bolt. Rotate the drive belt tensioner clockwise in order to relieve tension on the accessory drive belt. Remove the drive belt from the tensioner and pulleys. See Figure. Slowly release tension on the drive belt tensioner. Remove the ratchet and socket from the drive belt tensioner bolt.
- Install a ratchet with hex-head socket on the A/C belt tensioner bolt. Rotate the A/C drive belt tensioner clockwise in order to relieve tension on the drive belt. Remove the A/C drive belt from the pulleys. Slowly release tension on the A/C drive belt tensioner. Remove the ratchet and socket from the A/C drive belt tensioner bolt.
- Using Power Steering Pulley Puller (J-25034-C), remove the power steering pump pulley. Remove the power steering pump bolts and brace from the pump. Reposition the power steering pump to the crossmember. Remove the power steering pump bracket bolts and bracket.
- Disconnect the A/C compressor harness connector. Remove the rosebud clip from the engine bracket. Remove the A/C compressor bolts. See Fig 13. Remove the A/C compressor. Remove the A/C compressor bracket bolts. Remove the A/C compressor bracket.
- Remove the left side transmission cover bolt and cover, if equipped. Remove the right side transmission cover bolt and cover, if equipped. Remove the torque converter bolts.
- Remove the engine wiring harness clip bolt from the automatic transmission, if equipped. See Fig 9. Disconnect the 20-way and Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) harness connectors from the automatic transmission, if equipped. Remove the automatic transmission fill tube bolt.
- Remove the rosebud clip from the right side of the manual transmission, if equipped. See Fig 10. Disconnect the back-up light switch harness connector. Disconnect the skip shift solenoid, reverse lockout solenoid and VSS harness connectors from the left side of the manual transmission, if equipped. See Fig 11. Remove the push-in retainer from the manual transmission tab.
- Remove the generator rear bracket bolt. See Fig 14. Remove the generator bolts and transmission oil cooler clip. Remove the generator. Install an engine hoist to the engine brace.
- Remove the right side engine mount bolts and mount. Remove the engine mount heat shield nuts and shield. Remove the left side engine mount studs and mount.
- Raise the engine using the engine brace. With the aide of an assistant, lift the engine and transmission from the crossmember. Support the transmission on the engine support table.
- Remove the transmission bolts. Separate the transmission from the engine. Attach the Converter Holding Strap (J-21366) to the automatic transmission.
- Remove the pressure plate bolts, if equipped. Remove the pressure plate and clutch disc from the flywheel, if equipped. Remove the engine flywheel bolts. See Fig 15. Remove the flywheel.
- Install the engine to a engine stand. Remove the engine hoist from the engine block. Remove the engine lift bracket from the engine block.
- Remove the left side exhaust manifold pipe nuts. See Figure. Remove the left side catalytic converter and gasket. Remove the right side exhaust manifold pipe nuts. See Figure. Remove the right side catalytic converter and gasket.
- Disconnect the left side Connector Position Assurance (CPA) retainer. Remove the rosebud clips from the left side fuel rail. See Fig 16. Disconnect the Idle Air Control (IAC) valve, Throttle Position (TP) sensor, fuel injectors, ignition coil, canister purge valve and Air Injection Reaction (AIR) solenoid engine wiring harness connectors. See Fig 17.
- Disconnect the right side CPA retainer. Remove the rosebud clips from the right side fuel rail. See Fig 18. Disconnect the fuel injectors and ignition coil engine wiring harness connectors.
- Remove engine wiring harness ground bolts. Disconnect the oil pressure sensor and knock sensor engine wiring harness connectors. See Figure.
- Remove the engine wiring harness clip bolt. See Figure. Disconnect the Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) sensor harness connector. Remove the vacuum hose from the tee on the rear vacuum port.
- Disconnect the oil level sensor and Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor engine wiring harness connectors. See Fig 19. Remove the engine wiring harness from the engine.
WARNING:
In order to avoid possible injury or vehicle damage, always replace the accelerator control cable with a NEW cable whenever you remove the engine from the vehicle.
CAUTION:
In order to avoid cruise control cable damage, position the cable out of the way while you remove or install the engine. DO NOT pry or lean against the cruise control cable and DO NOT kink the cable. You must replace a damaged cable.
