Installation (Right Side)

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Pontiac Firebird and 2002 Chevrolet Camaro. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Clean the engine block head bolt holes, if required. Thread Repair Tool (J-42385-107) may be used to clean the threads of the old threadlocking material. See Figure.
  2. Spray cleaner (GM P/N 12346139 or P/N 12377981) into the hole. Clean the cylinder head holes with compressed air. Check the cylinder head locating pins for proper installation.
    3. NOTE: When properly installed, the tab on the left side cylinder head gasket will be located left side of center, or closer to the front of the engine, and the words "This Side Up", and the engine displacement, will be visible.
  3. Install the NEW right side cylinder head gasket onto the locating pins. Inspect the gasket for proper installation.
  4. Install the cylinder head onto the locating pins and the gasket. Install the NEW M11 cylinder head bolts. See Figure. Apply a 0.2" (5 mm) band of threadlock (GM P/N 12345382) to the threads of the M8 cylinder head bolts. Install the M8 cylinder head bolts.
  5. Tighten the cylinder head bolts. Tighten cylinder head bolts in sequence to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . See Figure.
  6. Install the engine wiring harness clip bolt to the rear of the right side cylinder head. See Figure. Tighten the engine wiring harness clip bolt to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
  7. Install the exhaust manifold. See EXHAUST MANIFOLD .
  8. Remove engine coolant pipe gaskets from the pipe. Clean the pipe and hose with solvent. Dry the pipe with compressed air. Inspect pipe for damage or restrictions. Inspect the gasket and hose sealing surface for damage. Inspect the hose for restrictions, cracking or wear. The hose may be reused if not damaged. DO NOT reuse gaskets. Install the NEW gaskets onto the engine coolant air bleed pipe. Install the coolant air bleed pipe and gaskets onto the cylinder heads. Install the coolant air bleed pipe studs. Tighten the studs to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . Install the intake manifold. See INTAKE MANIFOLD .
  9. Install the valve rocker arms and pushrods. See ROCKER ARMS & PUSH RODS .
  10. Install the inlet and outlet heater hoses to the vehicle. Install the inlet heater hose to the frame rail clip. Install the inlet and outlet heater hoses to the heater core. Install the bolt attaching the inlet and outlet heater hose bracket to the mid rail. Tighten the heater hose bracket bolt to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . Install the inlet and outlet heater hoses to the water pump. Fill the cooling system. See DRAINING & FILLING COOLING SYSTEM .
