Installation (Left Side)

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Pontiac Firebird and 2002 Chevrolet Camaro. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Clean the engine block cylinder head bolt holes, if required. Thread Repair Tool (J-42385-107) may be used to clean the threads of old threadlocking material. See Fig 1.
  2. Spray cleaner (GM P/N 12346139 or P/N 12377981) into the hole. Clean the cylinder head bolt holes with compressed air. Check the cylinder head locating pins for proper installation.
  3. NOTE: When properly installed, the tab on the left side cylinder head gasket will be located left side of center, or closer to the front of the engine, and the words "This Side Up", and the engine displacement, will be visible.
  4. Install the NEW cylinder head gasket onto the locating pins. Inspect the gasket for proper installation. Install the cylinder head onto the locating pins and the gasket. Install the NEW cylinder head bolts. See Figure.
  5. Tighten cylinder head bolts in sequence to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . See Figure.
  6. Install the engine wiring harness ground bolts to the cylinder head. See Figure. Tighten the engine wiring harness ground bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
  7. Install the exhaust manifold. See EXHAUST MANIFOLD . Install the power steering pump rear bracket. See POWER RACK & PINION - CAMARO & FIREBIRD in STEERING .
  8. Remove engine coolant pipe gaskets from the pipe. Clean the pipe and hose with solvent. Dry the pipe with compressed air. Inspect pipe for damage or restrictions. Inspect the gasket and hose sealing surface for damage. Inspect the hose for restrictions, cracking or wear. The hose may be reused if not damaged. DO NOT reuse gaskets. Install the NEW gaskets onto the engine coolant air bleed pipe. Install the coolant air bleed pipe and gaskets onto the cylinder heads. Install the coolant air bleed pipe studs. Tighten the studs to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . Install the intake manifold. See INTAKE MANIFOLD .
  9. Install the valve rocker arms and pushrods. See ROCKER ARMS & PUSH RODS .
