Crankshaft Balancer: Removal

- Remove the Air Conditioning (A/C) drive belt. See AIR CONDITIONING DRIVE BELT .
- Raise and suitably support the vehicle.
- Remove the starter motor. See STARTERS - CAMARO & FIREBIRD article in ENGINE.
- Remove the right side transmission cover and bolt. Remove the transmission oil cooler lines from the oil cooler clip near the generator. See Fig 1. Disconnect the transmission oil cooler lines at the radiator.
- Remove the power steering cooler, if equipped. See Fig 2. Place a drain pan under the vehicle and drain engine coolant. See DRAINING & FILLING COOLING SYSTEM . Remove power steering gear outlet hoses and hose clamps from the power steering cooler. Remove the hose clamps from the radiator hoses at the cooler. Remove the radiator hoses from the cooler. Remove the power steering cooler from the radiator support bracket.
- Install the Flywheel Holding Tool (J-42386-A) and bolts. See Fig 3. Make sure that the teeth of the tool mesh with teeth of the engine flywheel. Use one M10-1.5 x 120 mm and one M10-1.5 x 45 mm bolt for proper tool operation. Tighten the holding tool bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
- Remove the crankshaft balancer bolt. See Figure. DO NOT discard the crankshaft balancer bolt. The balancer bolt will be used during the balancer installation.
- Use the Crankshaft Balancer Remover (J-41816) and the Crankshaft End Protector (J-41816-2) to remove the crankshaft balancer. See Fig 4. Remove the balancer remover and the protector from the crankshaft balancer. Clean and inspect the crankshaft balancer.
