Crankshaft Balancer: Installation

NOTE:
The USED crankshaft balancer bolt will be used only during the first pass on the balancer installation procedure. Install a NEW crankshaft balancer bolt and tighten as described in the second, third and final passes of the balancer bolt tightening procedure. The crankshaft balancer installation and bolt tightening involves a 4 stage tightening process. The first pass ensures that the balancer is installed completely onto the crankshaft. The third and fourth passes tighten the NEW bolt to the proper torque. The balancer should be positioned onto the end of the crankshaft as straight as possible prior to tool installation.
- Install the crankshaft balancer onto the end of the crankshaft.
- Use the Crankshaft Balancer and Sprocket Installer (J-41665), in order to install the crankshaft balancer. See Fig 1.
- Assemble the threaded rod, nut, washer and installer. Insert the smaller end of the installer into the front of the balancer.
- Use a wrench and hold the hex end of the threaded rod. Use a second wrench and rotate the installation tool nut clockwise until the balancer is started onto the crankshaft.
- Remove the tool and reverse the installation tool. Position the larger end of the installer against the front of the balancer.
- Use a wrench and hold the hex end of the threaded rod. Use a second wrench and rotate the installation tool nut clockwise until the balancer installed onto the crankshaft.
- Remove the balancer installation tool.
- Install the USED crankshaft balancer bolt. Tighten the USED crankshaft balancer bolt to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . Remove the USED crankshaft balancer bolt. The nose of the crankshaft should be recessed .094-.176" (2.40-4.48 mm) into the balancer bore.WARNING: Measure for a correctly installed balancer. If the balancer is not installed to the proper dimensions, install the balancer installer and repeat the installation procedure. See Fig 2.
- Install the NEW crankshaft balancer bolt. Tighten the NEW crankshaft balancer bolt a first pass to specification, then a final pass to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
- Remove the flywheel holding tool and bolts.
- Install the transmission oil cooler lines to the radiator. Tighten the transmission oil cooler line fittings to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
- If equipped, install the power steering cooler to the radiator support bracket. Install the radiator hoses to the cooler. Install the radiator hose clamps to the radiator hoses at the cooler. Install the power steering gear outlet hoses and hose clamps to the cooler. Refill the engine with coolant. See DRAINING & FILLING COOLING SYSTEM . Bleed the power steering system. See POWER RACK & PINION - CAMARO & FIREBIRD article in STEERING . Remove the drain pan from under vehicle.
- Install the transmission oil cooler lines into the oil cooler clip near the generator. See Figure. Install the right side transmission cover and bolt. Tighten bolt to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
- Install the starter motor. See STARTERS - CAMARO & FIREBIRD article in ENGINE.
- Lower the vehicle. Install the Air Conditioning (A/C) drive belt. See AIR CONDITIONING DRIVE BELT .
- Perform the Crankshaft Position (CKP), system variation learn procedure. See COMPUTER RELEARN PROCEDURES article in GENERAL INFORMATION.
NOTE:
Ensure that the power steering cooler is installed with the ENGINE marking pointed toward the engine and the RADIATOR marking pointing toward the radiator (driver's side of the vehicle). See Figure. Alignment marks on the power steering cooler should align with alignment marks on the radiator hoses so the power steering cooler is properly positioned with the power steering circuit outlets pointing straight down.
