Cylinder Head: Valves

  1. Remove the spark plugs from the cylinder heads. Use the Valve Spring Compressor (J-8062), in order to compress the valve spring.
  2. Remove the valve stem keys. See Fig 1. Remove the valve spring cap. Remove the valve spring. Remove the valves. Remove the first design valve stem oil seal. Remove the first design valve spring shim. Remove the second design valve stem oil seal and shim assembly.
  3. Inspect the valve for the following:
    • Burnt or eroded areas.
    • Worn margin.
    • Bent stem.
    • Worn or scored stem.
    • Worn key groove.
    • Worn stem tip.
  4. Inspect the valve face for the following:
    • Worn or no margin.
    • Pitted surfaces.
    • Burnt or eroded areas.
  5. Inspect the valve margin. Reface pitted exhaust valves on a suitable valve refacing machine. Replace the valve if the margin is less than specification. See VALVES & VALVE SPRINGS SPECIFICATIONS  table.
  6. If the valve face has been ground, it may be necessary to shim the valve spring to obtain the proper spring installed height.
