Diagnostic Procedure

  1. If body rear end system diagnostic system check has been performed, go to next step. If body rear end system diagnostic system check has not been performed, perform BODY REAR END SYSTEM DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. After performing body rear end system diagnostic system check, go to next step.
  2. If DTC B3896 is set as current, go to next step. If DTC B3896 is not set as current, see DIAGNOSTIC AIDS  .
  3. Disconnect rear compartment occupant sensor harness connector. Rear compartment occupant sensor is located inside rear compartment, under center of package shelf. Connect a test light between ground and rear compartment occupant sensor harness connector Red/Black wire terminal. If test light does not illuminate, go to next step. If test light illuminates, go to step  9 .
  4. Measure voltage between ground and rear compartment occupant sensor harness connector Red/Black wire terminal. If battery voltage exists, go to next step. If battery voltage does not exist, go to step  11 .
  5. Connect test light between ground and rear compartment occupant sensor Orange wire terminal. If test light illuminates, go to next step. If test light does not illuminate, go to step  12 .
  6. Connect test light between rear compartment occupant sensor harness connector Orange wire terminal and Black/White wire terminal. If test light illuminates, go to next step. If test light does not illuminate, go to step  12 .
  7. Connect test light between ground and rear compartment occupant sensor harness connector Purple wire terminal. If test light illuminates, go to next step. If test light does not illuminate, go to step  13 .
  8. Check for poor connections at rear compartment occupant sensor harness connector. Repair as necessary. After repair, go to step  17 . If no problem is found, go to step  14 .
  9. Check for short to voltage in Red/Black wire between rear compartment occupant sensor harness connector and BCM harness connector C2 terminal A11. BCM is located under left side of instrument panel, above parking brake. See Figure and Figure . Repair as necessary. After repair, go to step  17 . If no problem is found, go to step  15 .
  10. Check for an open in Red/Black wire between rear compartment occupant sensor harness connector and BCM harness connector C2 terminal A11. BCM is located under left side of instrument panel, above parking brake. See Figure and Figure . Repair as necessary. After repair, go to step  17 . If no problem is found, go to step  15 .
  11. Repair high resistance, open or short to ground in Red/Black wire between rear compartment occupant sensor harness connector and BCM harness connector C2 terminal A11. BCM is located under left side of instrument panel, above parking brake. See Figure and Figure . After repair, go to step  17 .
  12. Repair high resistance or open in Black/White wire between ground and rear compartment occupant sensor harness connector. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . After repair, go to step  17 .
  13. Repair open or short to ground in Purple wire between rear compartment occupant sensor harness connector and left instrument panel fuse block. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . After repair, go to step  17 .
  14. Replace rear compartment occupant sensor. See REAR COMPARTMENT OCCUPANT SENSOR  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After repair, go to step  17 .
  15. Check for poor connections at BCM harness connectors. Repair as necessary. After repair, go to step  17 . If no problem is found, go to next step.
  16. Replace and program BCM. See appropriate BODY CONTROL MODULES article. After repair, go to next step.
  17. Using scan tool, clear DTCs. Operate vehicle within conditions for running DTC as specified in CODE ENABLE CRITERIA  . If DTC resets, go to step  2 . If DTC does not reset, system is okay.
