Diagnostic Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Chevrolet Monte Carlo, 2002 Chevrolet Impala, 2001 Chevrolet Monte Carlo, and 2001 Chevrolet Impala. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. If body rear end system diagnostic system check has been performed, go to next step. If body rear end system diagnostic system check has not been performed, perform BODY REAR END SYSTEM DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. After performing body rear end system diagnostic system check, go to next step.
  2. Install scan tool. Turn ignition switch to RUN position, with engine off. Using scan tool, command rear deck lid actuator ON and OFF. If rear deck lid actuator turns on and off as commanded, see DIAGNOSTIC AIDS  . If rear deck lid actuator does not turn on and off as commanded, go to next step.
  3. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect rear deck lid release actuator Black 2-pin harness connector. Turn ignition switch to RUN position, with engine off. Connect a test light between ground and rear deck lid release actuator harness connector terminal "A" (Light Blue wire). Using scan tool, command rear deck lid actuator ON and OFF while observing test light. If test light turns on and off as commanded, go to next step. If test light does not turn on and off as commanded, go to step  5 .
  4. Connect a test light between rear deck lid release actuator harness connector terminal "A" (Light Blue wire) and terminal "B" (Black wire). Using scan tool, command rear deck lid actuator ON and OFF while observing test light. If test light turns on and off as commanded, go to step  8 . If test light does not turn on and off as commanded, go to step  10 .
  5. If test light remains illuminated with each command, go to step  7 . If test light does not remain illuminated with each command, go to next step.
  6. Check for short to ground in Light Blue wire between rear deck lid release actuator harness connector terminal "A" and BCM Gray 24-pin harness connector C2 terminal A2. BCM is located under left side of instrument panel, above parking brake. See Figure and Figure . Repair as necessary. After repair, go to step  13 . If no problem is found, go to step  9 .
  7. Check for short to voltage in Light Blue wire between rear deck lid release actuator harness connector terminal "A" and BCM Gray 24-pin harness connector C2 terminal A2. BCM is located under left side of instrument panel, above parking brake. See Figure and Figure . Repair as necessary. After repair, go to step  13 . If no problem is found, go to step  9 .
  8. Check for poor connection at rear deck lid release actuator harness connector. Repair as necessary. After repair, go to step  13 . If no problem is found, go to step  11 .
  9. Check for poor connection at BCM Gray 24-pin harness connector C2. Repair as necessary. After repair, go to step  13 . If no problem is found, go to step  12 .
  10. Repair open in Black wire between rear deck lid release actuator harness connector terminal "B" and ground. Ground point is located below passenger front door opening, rear of right "A" pillar. After repair, go to step  13 .
  11. Replace rear deck lid latch. See REAR DECK LID LATCH  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After repair, go to step  13 .
  12. Replace and program BCM. See appropriate BODY CONTROL MODULES article. After repair, go to next step.
  13. Using scan tool, clear DTCs. Operate vehicle within conditions for running DTC as specified in CODE ENABLE CRITERIA  . If DTC resets, go to step  2 . If DTC does not reset, system is okay.
