Brake Pedal Excessive Travel

  1. If you were sent here from the SYMPTOMS (HYDRAULIC BRAKES) list, go to step  2 . If you were not sent here from the SYMPTOMS (HYDRAULIC BRAKES) list, see DIAGNOSTIC STARTING POINT (HYDRAULIC BRAKES)  .
  2. Inspect for proper brake pedal travel. See BRAKE PEDAL TRAVEL MEASUREMENT & INSPECTION  under ADJUSTMENTS & INSPECTION. If the brake pedal travel distance is within the acceptable limits, go to step  5 . If the brake pedal travel distance is not within the acceptable limits, go to step  3 .
  3. Inspect for worn, missing, misaligned, bent or damaged brake pedal system components.
    • For the brake pedal pushrod component inspection, see BRAKE PEDAL PUSHROD INSPECTION  under ADJUSTMENTS & INSPECTION.
    • Inspect the brake pedal bushings for excessive wear and/or damage and inspect the brake pedal for a misaligned, bent, and/or damaged condition.
    Replace the brake pedal system components that are worn, missing, misaligned, bent or damaged. Refer to the following procedures as necessary:
  4. Inspect for proper brake pedal travel. Refer to Brake Pedal Travel Measurement and Inspection. See BRAKE PEDAL TRAVEL MEASUREMENT & INSPECTION  under ADJUSTMENTS & INSPECTION. If the brake pedal travel distance within the acceptable limits, go to step  8 . If the brake pedal travel distance is not within the acceptable limits, go to step  5 .
  5. Inspect the hydraulic brake system for proper operation. See HYDRAULIC BRAKE SYSTEM DIAGNOSIS  under SYSTEM DIAGNOSIS. If the condition was found and corrected, go to step  8 . If the condition was not found and corrected, go to step  6 .
  6. Inspect the disc brake system for proper operation. See DISC BRAKE SYSTEM DIAGNOSIS  under SYSTEM TESTS. If the condition was found and corrected, go to step  8 . If the condition was not found and corrected, go to step  7 .
  7. Inspect the brake assist system for proper operation. See BRAKE ASSIST SYSTEM DIAGNOSIS  under SYSTEM TESTS. If the condition was found and corrected, go to step  8 . If the condition was not found and corrected, DIAGNOSTIC STARTING POINT (HYDRAULIC BRAKES)  TROUBLE SHOOTING.
  8. Road test the vehicle to confirm proper operation. See ROAD TEST  TROUBLE SHOOTING. If the condition is still present, go to step  2 . If the condition is not present, system is okay.
