Test F: Door Ajar Indicator Malfunction

  1. Perform driver information center system check. See DRIVER INFORMATION CENTER SYSTEM DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If driver information center system diagnostic system check has been performed, go to next step.
  2. Observe DOOR AJAR indicator in instrument panel cluster. If DOOR AJAR indicator is not functioning properly, go to next step. If DOOR AJAR indicator is functioning properly, check for intermittent problem. See DIAGNOSING INTERMITTENTS  . Repair or replace as necessary. After repair, go to step  22 .
  3. If DOOR AJAR indicator is on continuously, go to next step. If DOOR AJAR indicator is not on continuously, go to step  8 .
  4. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). Close all doors. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Using scan tool, observe driver door open switch and door ajar switches parameters in BODY CONTROL MODULE data list. If scan tool displays OPEN for either parameter, go to next step. If scan tool does not display OPEN for either parameter, go to step  16 .
  5. If scan tool displays OPEN for driver door open switch parameter, go to next step. If scan tool does not display OPEN for driver door open switch parameter, go to step  7 .
  6. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect driver door lock Natural 4-pin connector C1. See DOOR LOCK  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Using scan tool, observe driver door open switch parameter in BODY CONTROL MODULE data list. If scan tool displays CLOSED for driver door open switch parameter, go to step  17 . If scan tool does not display CLOSED for driver door open switch parameter, go to step  11 .
  7. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect each passenger door lock 4-pin connector C1 (Black right/front door, Natural left/rear door and Black right/rear door). See DOOR LOCK  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Using scan tool, observe door ajar switches parameters in BODY CONTROL MODULE data list. If scan tool displays CLOSED for any door ajar switches parameter, go to step  17 . If scan tool does not display CLOSED for any door ajar switches parameter, go to step  12 .
  8. If DOOR AJAR indicator operate when driver door is ajar, go to next step. If DOOR AJAR indicator does not operate when driver door is ajar, go to step  10 .
  9. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect driver door lock Natural 4-pin connector C1. See DOOR LOCK  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Connect a 3-amp fused jumper wire between driver door lock Natural 4-pin harness connector C1 terminals "B" (Dark Blue wire) and "D" (Black/White wire). If DOOR AJAR indicator illuminates, go to step  13 . If DOOR AJAR indicator does not illuminate, go to step  14 .
  10. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect appropriate passenger door lock 4-pin connector C1 (Black right/front door, Natural left/rear door and Black right/rear door). See DOOR LOCK  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Connect a 3-amp fused jumper wire between appropriate passenger door lock 4-pin connector C1 (Black right/front door, Natural left/rear door and Black right/rear door) Dark Blue/White wire terminal and Black/White wire terminal. If DOOR AJAR indicator illuminates, go to step  13 . If DOOR AJAR indicator does not illuminate, go to step  15 .
  11. Check for short to ground in Dark Blue wire between driver door lock Natural 4-pin harness connector C1 terminals "B" and Body Control Module (BCM) 16-pin Gray connector C3 terminal A8. See Fig 1 . Repair as necessary and go to step  22 . See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . If wire is okay, go to step  18 .
  12. Check for short to ground in Dark Blue/White wire between appropriate passenger door lock 4-pin connector C1 (Black right/front door, Natural left/rear door and Black right/rear door) BCM 16-pin Gray connector C3 terminal A1. Repair as necessary and go to step  22 . See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . If wire is okay, go to step  18 .
  13. Check for open in Black/White wire between appropriate door lock 4-pin harness connector C1 and ground connector G203. See Figure . Repair as necessary and go to step  22 . See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . If wire is okay, go to step  17 .
  14. Check for open in Dark Blue wire between driver door lock Natural 4-pin harness connector C1 terminals "B" and BCM 16-pin Gray connector C3 terminal A8. See Fig 1 . Repair as necessary and go to step  22 . See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . If wire is okay, go to step  18 .
  15. Check for open in Dark Blue/White wire between appropriate passenger door lock 4-pin connector C1 (Black right/front door, Natural left/rear door and Black right/rear door) BCM 16-pin Gray connector C3 terminal A1. See Fig 1 . Repair as necessary and go to step  22 . See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . If wire is okay, go to step  18 .
  16. Check for poor connection at Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) harness connector. Repair as necessary and go to step  22 . If connection is okay, go to step  19 .
  17. Check for poor connection at suspect door lock harness connector. Repair as necessary and go to step  22 . If connection is okay, go to step  20 .
  18. Check for poor connection at BCM harness connector. Repair as necessary and go to step  22 . If connection is okay, go to step  21 .
  19. Replace IPC. See INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER (IPC)  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After repair, go to step  22 .
  20. Replace appropriate door lock. See POWER DOOR LOCKS & TRUNK RELEASE - IMPALA & MONTE CARLO article. After repair, go to step  22 .
  21. Replace and program BCM. See BODY CONTROL MODULES - IMPALA & MONTE CARLO article. After repair, go to next step.
  22. Operate system to verify repair. If system operates normally, repair is complete. If system does not operate normally, return to step  2 .
