Sir Coil Assembly: Removal

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2000 Buick Park Avenue. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Before proceeding, See AIR BAG SAFETY PRECAUTIONS . Disable air bag system. See DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM .
  2. Ensure front wheels face straight ahead. Remove driver-side air bag module. See AIR BAG MODULES . Remove steering wheel. See STEERING WHEEL .
  3. Remove tilt lever by pulling straight out from column. Remove upper and lower steering column covers. Disconnect electrical connectors and remove wire harness straps. Remove retaining ring from steering shaft. Remove SIR coil assembly. See Figure.
NOTE: Coil assembly will become uncentered if column is separated from steering gear and allowed to rotate, or if centering spring is depressed, allowing hub to rotate while coil assembly is removed from column.
