Steering Column Lock Malfunction

  1. Connect scan tool. Select BCM DISPLAY DTC function. If scan tool displays DTC B2587, B2588, B2592 or B2593, perform appropriate diagnostic procedure for DTC set. See DIAGNOSTIC TESTS  . If DTCs are not present, go to next step.
  2. If steering column lock motor connector was disconnected with ignition on, go to step  18 . If steering column lock motor was not disconnected with ignition on, go to next step.
  3. Turn ignition on, engine off. Using scan tool, observe COLUMN LOCK STATE parameter in BCM data list. If scan tool does not display ENABLE STDBY, go to next step. If scan tool displays ENABLE STDBY, go to step  11 .
  4. Using scan tool, observe KEY IN IGNITION parameter in BCM data list. If scan tool displays ACTIVE with key in and INACTIVE with key out, go to next step. If scan tool does not display ACTIVE with key in and INACTIVE with key out, go to step  12 .
  5. Using scan tool, observe KEY OUT IGNITION parameter in BCM data list. If scan tool displays ACTIVE with key out and INACTIVE with key in, go to next step. If scan tool does not display ACTIVE with key out and INACTIVE with key in, go to step  15 .
  6. Turn ignition off. Remove key from ignition. Using scan tool, command steering column to lock and unlock. If steering column does not lock and unlock with each command, go to next step. If steering column locks and unlocks with each command, system is okay.
  7. Disconnect steering column lock relay. Connect a jumper wire between terminals A2 (White wire) and C1 (Orange wire). See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . Using scan tool, command steering column to lock and unlock. If steering column does not lock and unlock with each command, go to next step. If steering column locks and unlocks with each command, go to step  9 .
  8. Remove key from ignition. Reconnect steering column lock relay. Disconnect steering column lock motor connector. Connect a test light between lock motor connector terminal "D" (White wire) and terminal "C" (Purple wire). See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . Using scan tool, command steering column to lock and unlock. If test light does not turn on and off with each command, go to next step. If test light turns on and off with each command, replace steering column lock motor. See STEERING COLUMN LOCK MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
  9. Connect a test light between relay connector terminals A1 (Orange wire) and C2 (Dark Green wire). See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . Using scan tool, command steering column to lock and unlock. If test light does not turn on and off with each command, go to next step. If test light turns on and off with each command, replace steering column lock relay. After repairs, go to step  18 .
  10. Check Orange wire between BCM 2 fuse No. 23 (10-amp) and steering column lock relay, and check Dark Green wire between steering column lock relay and BCM for short to ground, short to voltage or open. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . If problem was found, repair as necessary. After repairs, go to step  18 . If problem was not found, go to step  16 .
  11. Check Light Green wire between steering column lock motor and BCM, and check Black wire between steering column lock motor and ground (G201) for short to ground, short to voltage or open. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . If problem was found, repair as necessary. After repairs, go to step  18 . If problem was not found, replace steering column lock motor. See STEERING COLUMN LOCK MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
  12. Check Light Green/Black wire between ignition switch and BCM, and check Black wire between ignition switch and ground (G202) for short to ground, short to voltage or open. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . If problem was found, repair as necessary. After repairs, go to step  18 . If problem was not found, go to step  17 .
  13. Check Purple wire between steering column lock motor and BCM, check White wire between steering column lock motor and steering column lock relay, and check Orange wire between steering column lock relay and BCM for short to ground, short to voltage or open. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . If problem was found, repair as necessary. After repairs, go to step  18 . If problem was not found, go to next step.
  14. Check Black wire between BCM and ground (G202) for open. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . If problem was found, repair as necessary. After repairs, go to step  18 . If problem was not found, go to step  16 .
  15. Check Tan wire between ignition switch and BCM, and check Black wire between ignition switch and ground (G202) for short to ground, short to voltage or open. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . If problem was found, repair as necessary. After repairs, go to step  18 . If problem was not found, go to step  17 .
  16. Check BCM connectors for poor connections. If connectors are okay, replace BCM. See BODY CONTROL MODULES - CORVETTE article. After repairs, go to step  18 .
  17. Check ignition switch connector for poor connections. If connectors are okay, replace ignition lock cylinder. See REMOVAL & INSTALLATION in ANALOG INSTRUMENT PANELS - CORVETTE article. After repairs, go to step  18 .
  18. Disconnect BCM1 & IPC fuse No. 25 (10-amp) for 15 seconds to clear steering column fail enable mode. Operate system to verify repair.
