Horns Inoperative

NOTE: Check horn system operation prior to performing test procedure and after any repairs are completed. See HORN SYSTEM CHECK  under TROUBLE SHOOTING.
  1. If system check was performed, go to next step. If system check was not performed, see HORN SYSTEM CHECK  under TROUBLE SHOOTING.
  2. Remove HORN fuse (20-amp) located in underhood electrical center. Using a test light connected to ground, check for power at horn fuse terminal "B" of underhood electrical center. Depress horn switch. If battery voltage does not exist, go to next step. If battery voltage exists, go to step  10 .
  3. Remove horn relay. Connect DVOM between ground and Black wire terminal of horn relay connector at underhood electrical center. Measure resistance with horn switch depressed. If resistance is 0-2 ohms, go to step  6 . If resistance is greater than 2 ohms, go to next step.
  4. Remove inflator module from steering wheel. See AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS article. Disconnect horn brush slip sing connector from inside steering wheel. Using DVOM, measure resistance between horn brush slip ring connector terminal and Black wire terminal of horn relay connector at underhood electrical center. If resistance is 0-2 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is greater than 2 ohms, go to step  7
  5. Disconnect horn ground strap pigtail terminal in steering wheel. Using DVOM, measure resistance between ground and horn ground strap pigtail terminal. If resistance is 0-2 ohms, go to step  9 . If resistance is greater than 2 ohms, go to step  8 .
  6. Replace horn relay.
  7. Repair open or high resistance in Black wire between slip ring and horn relay.
  8. Repair open or short in Black wire between Body Control Module (BCM) connector C1, terminal B10 and horn relay.
  9. Replace horn switch.
  10. Inspect HORN fuse (20-amp) located in underhood electrical center. If fuse is open, go to step  13 . If fuse is okay, go to next step.
  11. Disconnect horn connector. Using DVOM, measure resistance of Dark Green wire between horn connector and horn fuse cavity. If resistance is 0-2 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is greater than 2 ohms, go to step  14 .
  12. Using DVOM, measure resistance between ground and Black wire terminal of horn electrical connector. If resistance is 0-2 ohms, go to step  16 . If resistance is greater than 2 ohms, go to step  15 .
  13. Disconnect horn electrical connector. Check for continuity between ground and Dark Green wire terminal at horn electrical connector. If continuity exists, go to step  17 . If continuity does not exist, go to step  16 .
  14. Repair open or short in Dark Green wire between horn and horn fuse cavity.
  15. Repair open in Black wire between horn connector and ground.
  16. Replace horn.
  17. Repair open or short in Black wire between BCM and horn relay.
