Diagnostic Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2000 Chevrolet Corvette. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Connect scan tool. Turn ignition on, engine off. Using scan tool, command horn relay ON and OFF. If horn relay does not turn on and off with scan tool command, go to next step. If relay does turn on and off with scan tool command, problem is intermittent.
  2. Turn ignition off. Disconnect horn relay. Turn ignition on, engine off. Using a test light connected to ground, probe coil feed terminal of horn relay socket (terminals closest to maxifuses). If test light is on, go to next step. If test light is off, go to step . 9
  3. Connect test light between horn relay control circuit and coil side feed circuit. Using scan tool, command horn relay ON and OFF. If test light does not turn on and off with scan tool command, go to next step. If test light turns on and off with scan tool, go to step  7 .
  4. If test light does not remain on with each command, go to next step. If test light remains on with each command, go to step  6 .
  5. Check horn relay control circuit (Black wire) for open (DTC B2527) or short to voltage (DTC B2528). If problem was found, repair as necessary. After repairs, go to step  10 . If problem was not found, go to step  8 .
  6. Check horn relay control circuit (Black wire) for short to ground. If problem was found, repair as necessary. After repairs, go to step  10 . If problem was not found, go to step  8 .
  7. Check connections at horn relay socket. If relay socket connections are okay, replace horn relay. After repairs, go to step  10 .
  8. Check BCM connectors for poor connections. If connectors are okay, replace BCM. See BODY CONTROL MODULES - CORVETTE article. After repairs, go to step  10 .
  9. Repair horn relay coil side feed circuit. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . After repairs, go to step  10 .
  10. Using scan tool, clear DTCs. Operate vehicle to ensure DTCs do not reset.
