Test T: Turn Signal Indicators Inoperative: Testing

  1. If diagnostic system check has been performed, go to next step. If diagnostic system check has not been performed, perform LIGHTING SYSTEMS DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
  2. Turn ignition switch OFF. Put the park brake on. Turn ignition to RUN position. Place the turn signal switch in the LH and RH ON position. If turn signals operate properly, inspect for intermittents or poor connections. See TROUBLE SHOOTING . If turn signals do not operate properly, go to next step.
  3. If all of the turn signal lamps and indicators are inoperative, go to step  8. If all of the turn signal lamps and indicators are not inoperative, go to next step.
  4. If only the turn signal indicators are inoperative, go to step  11. If only the turn signal indicators are not inoperative, go to next step.
  5. On Pontiac only. If the front turn signal and turn signal indicator are inoperative on one side, then go to step  12. If the front turn signal and turn signal indicator are not inoperative on one side, then go to next step.
  6. On Pontiac only. If the inboard rear turn signal and the outboard rear turn signal are inoperative on one side, then go to step  13. If the inboard rear turn signal and the outboard rear turn signals are not inoperative on one side, then go to the next step.
  7. If front turn signals are inoperative, go to step  14. If front turn signals are not inoperative, go to step  17.
  8. Turn ignition to RUN position. Disconnect turn signal flasher module. Connect test lamp between the ignition 3 voltage circuit of the turn signal flasher module and a good ground. If test lamp illuminates, go to next step. If test lamp does not illuminate, go to step  19.
  9. Install fused jumper between the ignition 3 voltage circuit and the turn signal flasher signal circuit of the signal module connector. Place the turn signal switch in the RH ON position and the LH ON position. If turn signal lamps illuminate, go to step  21. If turn signal lamps do not illuminate, go to next step.
  10. Leave jumper connected. Probe turn signal flasher signal circuit of the female C216 connector with test lamp to a good ground. If test lamp illuminates, go to step  22. If test lamp does not illuminate, go to step  27.
  11. Turn ignition OFF. Disconnect Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC). Probe inoperative turn signal switch signal supply voltage circuit of the IPC connector with a test lamp that is connected to ground. Turn ignition to RUN position. Place the turn signal switch in appropriate ON position. If test lamp flashes ON and OFF, go to step  23. If test lamp does not flash ON and OFF, go to step  28.
  12. For Pontiac only. Turn ignition to RUN position. Probe affected turn signal switch signal circuit of the male C216 connector with a test lamp that is connected to ground. Place turn signal switch in the ON position. If test lamp illuminates, go to step  29. If test lamp does not illuminate, go to step  22.
  13. For Pontiac only. Turn ignition to RUN position. Use test lamp that is grounded, backprobe supply voltage circuit of the affected rear turn signals at the male C216 connector. Place turn signal switch in the ON position. If test lamp illuminates, go to step  30. If test lamp does not illuminate, go to step  22.
  14. Turn ignition to RUN position. Disconnect inoperative front turn signal lamp. Connect test lamp between supply voltage circuit of inoperative front turn signal lamp and a good ground. Place turn signal switch in the ON position. If test lamp flashes ON and OFF, go to step  16. If test lamp does not flash ON and OFF, go to next step.
  15. Disconnect daytime running lamps (DRL) control module connector. Use a test lamp between turn signal switch signal circuit of the DRL control module connector and a ground. Place turn signal switch in the ON position. If test lamp flashes ON and OFF, go to step  20. If test lamp does not flash ON and OFF, go to step  31.
  16. Connect test lamp to ground and the turn signal lamp supply voltage circuit of the inoperative front turn signal lamp. Place the turn signal switch in the ON position. If the test lamp flashes ON and OFF, go to step  25. If test lamp does not flash ON and OFF, go to step  32.
  17. Turn ignition to RUN position. Disconnect inoperative rear turn signal lamp. Connect a test lamp between the supply voltage circuit of the inoperative rear turn signal lamp and a good ground. Place turn signal switch in the ON position. If test lamp flashes ON and OFF, go to next step. If test lamp does not flash ON and OFF, go to step  33.
  18. Connect a test lamp between the ground circuit and the turn signal lamp supply voltage circuit of the inoperative rear turn signal lamp. Place turn signal switch in the ON position. If test lamp flashes ON and OFF, go to step  25. If test lamp does not flash ON and OFF, go to step  34.
  19. Test for an open or high resistance in ignition 3 voltage circuit of the turn signal flasher module. If condition is found, repair as necessary and go to step  40. If no condition is found, go to step  26.
  20. Test for an open or high resistance in supply voltage circuit of the inoperative front turn signal. If condition is found, repair as necessary and go to step  40. If no condition is found, go to step  24.
  21. Inspect for poor connections at the harness connector of the turn signal flasher module. If condition is found, repair as necessary and go to step  40. If no condition is found, go to step  35.
  22. Inspect for poor connections at the turn signal switch. If condition is found, repair as necessary and go to step  40. If no condition is found, go to step  36.
  23. Inspect for poor connections at the Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC). If condition is found, repair as necessary and go to step  40. If no condition is found, go to step  37.
  24. Inspect for poor connections at the Daytime Running Lamps (DRL). If condition is found, repair as necessary and go to step  40. If no condition is found, go to step  38.
  25. Inspect for poor connections at the inoperative turn signal lamp. If condition is found, repair as necessary and go to step  40. If no condition is found, go to step  39.
  26. Repair short to ground in ignition 3 voltage circuit of the turn signal flasher module or the turn signal supply voltage circuit. If condition is found and repaired, go to step  40.
  27. Repair open or high resistance in the signal circuit of the turn signal flasher module. If condition is found and repaired, go to step  40.
  28. Repair open or high resistance in the turn signal switch signal circuit of the turn signal indicator. If condition is found and repaired, go to step  40.
  29. Repair the poor connection at the turn signal switch signal circuit of the connector C216. If condition is found and repaired, go to step  40.
  30. Repair the open or high resistance in the supply voltage circuit of the affected rear turn signals. If condition is found and repaired, go to step  40.
  31. Repair the open or high resistance in the turn signal switch signal circuit of the inoperative front turn signal. If condition is found and repaired, go to step  40.
  32. Repair the open or high resistance in the ground circuit of the inoperative front turn signal. If condition is found and repaired, go to step  40.
  33. Repair the open or high resistance in the supply voltage circuit of the inoperative rear turn signal. If condition is found and repaired, go to step  40.
  34. Repair the open or high resistance in the ground circuit of the inoperative rear turn signal. If condition is found and repaired, go to step  40.
  35. Replace the turn signal flasher module, then go to step  40.
  36. Replace turn signal switch, then go to step  40.
  37. Replace Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC), then go to step  40.
  38. Replace Daytime Running Lamps (DRL), then go to step  40.
  39. Replace inoperative turn signal lamp, then go to next step.
  40. Operate system to verify repair. If condition has been corrected, system is operating correctly at this time. If condition has not been corrected, repeat test procedure beginning at step  2.
