Testing (2001)

  1. If diagnostic system check has been performed, go to next step. If diagnostic system check has not been performed, perform INSTRUMENT CLUSTER DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
  2. If fasten seat belt indicator is not illuminated, go to next step. If fasten seat belt indicator is illuminated, perform TEST O: FASTEN SEAT BELT INDICATOR/CHIME ALWAYS ON .
  3. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Turn headlight switch to OFF position. If headlights are not on, go to next step. If headlights are on, repair headlights as necessary. See EXTERIOR LIGHTS article.
  4. Ensure ignition switch is in OFF position. Ensure driver's front door is closed. Disconnect Body Control Module (BCM) 32-pin harness connector C3. BCM is located below right side of instrument panel, near blower motor. See Figure. Inspect Gray/Black wire for a short to ground between ground and BCM harness connector C3 terminal D11. See Fig 1. If a short to ground is not found, go to next step. If a short to ground is found, repair as necessary then go to step  10.
  5. Deactivate air bag system. See appropriate AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS article. Remove ignition key from ignition lock cylinder. Connect a test light between BCM harness connector C3 terminal C14 (Light Green wire) and battery voltage. If test light illuminates, go to next step. If test light does not illuminate, go to step  8.
  6. Disconnect ignition key alarm switch 11-pin harness connector C216. Ignition key alarm switch is located at base of steering column. Ensure test light is still connected to BCM harness connector. If test light illuminates, go to next step. If test light does not illuminate, go to step  9.
  7. Repair short to ground in Light Green wire, then go to step  10.
  8. Replace BCM. Program BCM. See BODY CONTROL MODULE  under PROGRAMMING. After replacement, go to step  10.
  9. Replace ignition key alarm switch, then go to next step.
  10. Operate system to verify repair. If condition has been corrected, system is operating correctly at this time. If condition has not been corrected, repeat test procedure beginning at step  2.
