Testing (2001)

  1. If diagnostic system check has been performed, go to next step. If diagnostic system check has not been performed, perform INSTRUMENT CLUSTER DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
  2. Start engine and observe LOW OIL indicator. If LOW OIL indicator illuminates, go to next step. If LOW OIL indicator does not illuminate, inspect for intermittents and poor connection. See TROUBLE SHOOTING .
  3. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). DLC is located below left side of instrument panel, to right of steering column. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Using scan tool, select Powertrain Control Module (PCM) engine 2 data list. See SCAN TOOL DATA LIST  table. If engine oil level switch parameter does not indicate OK, go to next step. If engine oil level switch parameter indicates OK, go to step  7.
  4. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect PCM 80-pin harness connector. PCM is located on right side of engine compartment, near rear of wheelwell. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Using a test light, probe Brown wire between PCM harness connector C2 terminal No. 58 (3.8L) or PCM harness connector C1 terminal No. 70 (5.7L) and battery voltage. If test light does not illuminate, go to next step. If test light illuminates, go to step  13.
  5. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Inspect Brown wire for an open or high resistance between engine oil level switch harness connector terminal "A" and PCM harness connector C2 terminal No. 58 (3.8L) or PCM harness connector C1 terminal No. 70 (5.7L). If an open or high resistance is not found, go to next step. If an open or high resistance is found, repair as necessary then go to step  13.
  6. Disconnect engine oil level switch 2-pin harness connector. See COMPONENT LOCATIONS  for location of engine oil level switch. Inspect Black/White wire for an open or high resistance between ground and engine oil level switch harness connector terminal "B". On 5.7L engine, ground point is located on rear of left cylinder head. On 3.8L engines, ground point is located on engine block, behind power steering pump pulley. If an open or high resistance is not found, go to step  9. If an open or high resistance is found, repair as necessary then go to step  13.
  7. Inspect Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) harness connector for poor connections. If poor connections are not found, go to step  10. If poor connections are found, repair as necessary then go to step  13.
  8. Inspect PCM harness connector for poor connections. If poor connections are not found, go to step  11. If poor connections are found, repair as necessary then go to step  13.
  9. Inspect engine oil level switch harness connector for poor connections. If poor connections are not found, go to step  12. If poor connections are found, repair as necessary then go to step  13.
  10. Replace IPC. Program IPC. See INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER  under PROGRAMMING. After replacement, go to step  13.
  11. Replace PCM. Program PCM. See POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE  under PROGRAMMING. After replacement, go to step  13.
  12. Replace engine oil level switch, then go to next step.
  13. Operate system to verify repair. If condition has been corrected, system is operating correctly at this time. If condition has not been corrected, repeat test procedure beginning at step  3.
