Test C: Engine Oil Pressure Gauge Inaccurate Or Inoperative: Testing

  1. If diagnostic system check has been performed, go to next step. If diagnostic system check has not been performed, perform INSTRUMENT CLUSTER DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
  2. Start engine and observe engine oil pressure gauge. If engine oil pressure gauge is not 10-70 psi, go to next step. If engine oil pressure gauge is 10-70 psi, inspect for intermittent or poor connections. See TROUBLE SHOOTING .
  3. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect engine oil pressure sensor 2-pin harness connector. Start engine and observe engine oil pressure gauge. If engine oil pressure gauge displays 80 psi or more, go to next step. If engine oil pressure gauge does not display 80 psi or more, go to step  6.
  4. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Connect a 3-amp fused jumper wire between ground and engine oil pressure sensor Tan wire terminal. Start engine and observe engine oil pressure gauge. If engine oil pressure gauge does not display zero psi or below, go to next step. If engine oil pressure gauge displays zero psi or below, go to step  7.
  5. Inspect Tan wire for an open, high resistance or short to voltage between engine oil pressure sensor and Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) harness connector terminal B14. If an open, high resistance or short voltage is not found, go to step  9. If an open, high resistance or short to voltage is found, repair as necessary then go to step  12.
  6. Inspect Tan wire for a short to ground between engine oil pressure sensor and IPC terminal B14. If a short to ground is not found, go to step  9. If a short to ground is found, repair as necessary then go to step  12.
  7. Inspect Black/White wire for an open or high resistance between ground and engine oil pressure sensor terminal "B". If an open or high resistance is not found, go to next step. If an open or high resistance is found, repair as necessary then go to step  12. On 5.7L engine, ground point is located on rear of left cylinder head. On 3.8L engines, ground point is located on engine block behind power steering pump pulley.
  8. Inspect engine oil pressure sensor harness connector for poor connections. If poor connections are not found, go to step  10. If poor connections are found, repair as necessary then go to step  12.
  9. Disconnect IPC 34-pin harness connector. IPC is integral to instrument cluster. See Figure. Inspect IPC harness connector for poor connections. If poor connections are not found, go to step  11. If poor connections are found, repair as necessary then go to step  12.
  10. Replace engine oil pressure sensor, then go to step  12.
  11. Replace IPC. Program IPC. See INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER  under PROGRAMMING. After replacement, go to next step.
  12. Operate system to verify repair. If system operates correctly, system is okay at this time. If system does not operate correctly, repeat test procedure beginning at step  2.
