Testing (2002)
- If diagnostic system check has been performed, go to next step. If diagnostic system check has not been performed, perform INSTRUMENT CLUSTER DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Install scan tool. Raise and support rear drive wheels. Start engine and let idle. Place gearshift selector in Drive position on automatic transmissions, or 3rd gear for manual transmissions. Observe Vehicle Speed parameter. If Vehicle Speed Sensor parameter doesn't match the speedometer display, go to next step. If it does match, see DIAGNOSTIC AIDS .
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect Powertrain Control Module (PCM) 80-pin harness connector C1 (3.8L) or C2 (5.7L). PCM is located on right side of engine compartment, near rear of wheelwell. Install one lead of the J 33431-C Signal Generator and Instrument Panel Tester to the vehicle speed signal circuit at the PCM harness connector C1 terminal No. 55 or PCM harness connector C2 terminal No. 50, and the other lead to a good ground. Turn ignition to run position. Set the J 33431-C to generate a speedometer signal. If vehicle speedometer indicates approximately 55 MPH, go to step 5. If vehicle speedometer doesn't indicate approximately 55 MPH, go to next step.
- Inspect Dark Green/White wire for an open or short between ground and PCM harness connector C1 terminal No. 55 or PCM harness connector C2 terminal No. 50. If an open is not found, go to step 6. If an open is found, repair as necessary then go to step 9
- Inspect PCM harness connector for poor connections. If poor connections are not found, go to step 7. If poor connections are found, repair as necessary then go to step 9.
- Inspect IPC harness connector for poor connections. If poor connections are not found, go to step 8. If poor connections are found, repair as necessary then go to step 9.
- Replace the PCM. Program PCM. See POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE under PROGRAMMING. Go to step 9.
- Replace the IPC. See INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER under REMOVAL and INSTALLATION.
- Using scan tool, clear DTCs. Operate system to verify repair. If DTC resets, repeat test procedure beginning at step 2.
