Description & Operation

WARNING: Vehicles are equipped with air bag supplemental restraint system. Before attempting ANY repairs involving steering column, instrument panel or related components, see SERVICE PRECAUTIONS and DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM in appropriate AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS article.

Analog instrument panel cluster consists of speedometer/odometer, engine coolant temperature gauge, oil pressure gauge, fuel gauge, tachometer and volt gauge. Instrument cluster warning indicators include: seat belt, AIR BAG, SERVICE ENGINE SOON, SERVICE VEHICLE, LOW OIL, BRAKE, ABS INOP, CHECK GAUGES, SECURITY, high beam, OIL CHANGE, hatch ajar and turn signals. See Fig 1. Instrument cluster may also be equipped with warning indicators for Acceleration Slip Regulation (ASR), Camaro, Traction Control System (TCS) OFF, Firebird, LOW TRAC (ASR or TCS) and SKIP SHIFT (5.7L M/T). Power is supplied to appropriate indicator lights and gauges by a flexible printed circuit attached to back of instrument cluster.
