Test H: Horns Inoperative

  1. Review horn operation. See DESCRIPTION & OPERATION  . After review, go to next step.
  2. Press horn switch. If horn does not operate, go to next step. If horn operates, inspect for intermittents. See TROUBLE SHOOTING  .
  3. Remove horn relay from top underhood fuse block. Top underhood fuse block is located on left front corner of engine compartment. Connect a test light between ground and horn relay socket E8 (Orange wire). If test light illuminates, go to next step. If test light does not illuminate, go to step  13 .
  4. Connect a test light between horn relay sockets E8 (Orange wire) and F8 (Black wire). Press and hold horn switch. If test light illuminates, go to next step. If test light does not illuminate, go to step  14 .
  5. Connect a test light between ground and horn relay socket E6 (Orange wire). If test light illuminates, go to next step. If test light does not illuminate, go to step  15 .
  6. Momentarily connect a fused 15-amp jumper wire between horn relay sockets E6 (Orange wire) and F6 (Dark Green wire). If horn does not sound, go to next step. If horn sounds, go to step  11 .
  7. Install horn relay. Disconnect horn 2-pin harness connector. Horn is located on right front side of vehicle, below headlights. Connect a test light between ground and horn harness connector terminal "B" (Dark Green wire). Press and hold horn switch. If test light illuminates, go to next step. If test light does not illuminate, go to step  16 .
  8. Connect a test light between horn harness connector terminals "A" (Black wire) and "B" (Dark Green wire). Press and hold horn switch. If test light illuminates, go to next step. If test light does not illuminate, go to step  17 .
  9. Inspect horn harness connector for poor connections. If poor connections are not found, go to next step. If poor connections are found, repair horn harness connector as necessary. After repair, go to step  20 .
  10. Connect a fused 15-amp jumper wire between battery positive terminal and horn terminal "B" (component side). Connect a second jumper wire between battery negative terminal and horn terminal "A" (component side). If horn sounds, go to step  12 . If horn does not sound, go to step  19 .
  11. Inspect horn relay sockets for poor connections. If poor connections are not found, go to step  18 . If poor connections are found, repair horn relay sockets as necessary. After repair, go to step  20 .
  12. Repair high resistance in Black wire between horn relay, horn slip ring and horn switch or in Black wire between horn and ground. Ground point is located on top right side of radiator support. After repair, go to step  20 .
  13. Repair open or high resistance in Orange wire between horn relay coil and top underhood fuse block. After repair, go to step  20 .
  14. Disable air bag. See appropriate AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS article. Repair open or short to voltage in Black wire between horn relay, horn slip ring and horn switch. After repair, go to step  20 .
  15. Repair open or high resistance in Orange wire between horn relay switch and top underhood fuse block. After repair, go to step  20 .
  16. Repair open or high resistance in Dark Green wire horn relay and horns. After repair, go to step  20 .
  17. Repair open or high resistance in Black wire between horn and ground. Ground point is located on top right side of radiator support. After repair, go to step  20 .
  18. Replace horn relay, then go to step  20 .
  19. Replace horn, then go to next step.
  20. Operate system to verify repair. If system is not operating correctly, repeat test beginning at step  1 .
