Test F: Radio Steering Wheel Controls Inoperative

  1. Review radio controls description and operation. See DESCRIPTION & OPERATION  . After review, go to next step.
  2. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Turn radio on. Operate all steering wheel controls for radio. If all steering wheel controls do not operate correctly, go to next step. If any steering wheel control operates correctly, inspect for intermittents. See TROUBLE SHOOTING  .
  3. WARNING: Deactivate air bag system before performing any service operation. See appropriate AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS article. DO NOT apply electrical power to any component on steering column without first deactivating air bag system. Air bag may deploy.
  4. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disable air bag system. See appropriate AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS article. Disconnect inflatable restraint steering wheel module coil 4-pin harness connector. Inflatable restraint steering wheel module coil harness connector is located at base of steering column. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Turn radio on. Measure voltage between ground and inflatable restraint steering wheel module coil harness connector terminal "A" (Yellow wire). Voltage should be 12 DC volts. If voltage is as specified, go to next step. If voltage is not as specified, go to step  5 .
  5. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Measure resistance between ground and inflatable restraint steering wheel module coil harness connector terminal "A" (Yellow wire). Press steering wheel controls for radio, and record resistance. See STEERING WHEEL CONTROL RESISTANCE  table. If resistance is as specified, go to next step. If resistance is not as specified, go to step  7 .

  6. Inspect Yellow wire for an open, high resistance or short to ground between inflatable restraint sheering wheel module coil harness connector terminal "A" and instrument panel fuse block. Instrument panel fuse block is located behind left side of instrument panel. If an open, high resistance or short to ground is not found, go to next step. If an open, high resistance or short to ground is found, repair Yellow wire as necessary. After repair, go to step  11 .
  7. Remove and disconnect radio 9-pin Gray harness connector C3. Inspect Dark Blue wire for an open, high resistance or short between inflatable restraint steering wheel module coil harness connector terminal "C" and radio harness connector C3 terminal No. 14. If an open, high resistance or short is not found, go to step  8 . If an open, high resistance or short is found, repair Dark Blue wire as necessary. After repair, go to step  11 .
  8. Inspect Yellow wire for an open, high resistance or short between inflatable restraint steering wheel module coil harness connector terminal "A" and instrument panel fuse block. Inspect Dark Blue wire for an open, high resistance or short between inflatable restraint steering wheel coil harness connector terminal "C" and radio harness connector C3 terminal No. 14. Inspect steering wheel controls harness connector for poor connections. If an open, high resistance, short or poor connections are not found, go to step  9 . If an open, high resistance, short or poor connections are found, repair Yellow wire, Dark Blue wire or harness connector as necessary. After repair, go to step  11 .
  9. Inspect radio harness connector C3 for poor connections. If poor connections are not found, go to step  10 . If poor connections are found, repair radio harness connector C3 as necessary. After repair, go to step  11 .
  10. Replace suspect steering wheel control, then go to step  11 .
  11. Replace radio, then go to next step.
  12. Operate system to verify repair. If system is not operating correctly, repeat test beginning at step  2 .
