Test E: High Lock Effort

NOTE: When replacing ignition key, verify if vehicle is equipped with PASS-KEY II(R). If vehicle is equipped with PASS-KEY II(R), new ignition key will need to be programmed. See ANTI-THEFT SYSTEMS - CAMARO & FIREBIRD article.
  1. Review steering wheel and column description and operation. See DESCRIPTION & OPERATION  . After review, go to next step.
  2. Verify that lock system has a high lock effort. If lock system does not operate correctly, go to next step. If lock system operates correctly, system is okay at this time.
  3. Inspect for an incorrect, worn or damaged key. If key is correct and not worn or damaged, go to next step. If key is incorrect, worn or damaged, go to step  7 .
  4. Inspect for faulty lock cylinder, If lock cylinder is not damaged, go to next step. If lock cylinder is damaged, go to step  8 .
  5. Inspect lock module assembly for damage. If lock module assembly is not damaged, go to next step. If lock module assembly is damaged, go to step  9 .
  6. Inspect ignition switch for damage. If ignition switch is not damaged, go to next step. If ignition switch is damaged, go to step  10 .
  7. Replace ignition key, then go to step  11 .
  8. Replace lock cylinder, then go to step  11 .
  9. Tighten lock module assembly as necessary, then go to step  11 .
  10. Replace ignition switch, then go to next step.
  11. Operate system to verify repair. If system is not operating correctly, repeat test beginning at step  3 .
