Steering Wheel: Removal

  1. Disconnect negative battery terminal. Set front wheels in straight-ahead position. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disable air bag system. See appropriate AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS article. Remove air bag module. Mark steering wheel hub in relation to slash mark on steering shaft for installation reference.
  2. Remove steering wheel nut (3). Disconnect horn ground lead (5). Using Steering Wheel Puller (J-1859-A) and Steering Wheel Puller Bolts (J-38720), remove steering wheel (2). DO NOT install puller bolts too deep into hub, as inflatable steering wheel restraint module coil assembly will be damaged. Remove steering wheel horn switch.
