Test A : Cruise Control Inoperative/Malfunction (With Electronic Throttle Control): Testing

  1. If diagnostic system check has been performed, go to next step. If diagnostic system check has not been performed, perform CRUISE CONTROL DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
  2. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). DLC is located below left side of instrument panel, to right of steering column. Using scan tool, monitor cruise control ON switch parameters. Turn cruise control switch to ON position. If scan tool parameter displays ON, go to next step. If scan tool parameter displays OFF, go to step  9.
  3. Using scan tool, monitor Set/Coast switch parameters. Press SET button. If scan tool parameter displays ON, go to next step. If scan tool parameter displays OFF, go to step  14.
  4. Using scan tool, monitor Resume/Accelerate switch parameters. Press R/A switch. If scan tool parameter displays ON, go to next step. If scan tool parameter displays OFF, go to step  15.
  5. Using scan tool, monitor stoplight switch parameters. Press brake pedal. If scan tool parameter displays APPLIED, go to next step. If scan tool parameter displays RELEASED, go to step  10.
  6. Using scan tool, monitor Torque Converter Clutch (TCC)/brake switch parameters. Press brake pedal. If scan tool displays APPLIED, go to next step. If scan tool displays RELEASED, go to step  11.
  7. If vehicle is equipped with a manual transmission, go to next step. If vehicle is equipped with an automatic transmission, go to step  29.
  8. Using scan tool, monitor Clutch Pedal Position (CPP) switch parameters. Press clutch pedal. If scan tool displays RELEASED, go to step  12. If scan tool displays APPLIED, go to step  29.
  9. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect multifunction lever switch 11-pin harness connector. Multifunction lever switch harness connector is located at base of steering column. Connect a test light between ground and multifunction lever switch harness connector terminal "L" (Purple wire). See Fig 1. If test light illuminates, go to step  13. If test light does not illuminate, go to step  21.

  10. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect stoplight switch 2-pin harness connector. Stoplight switch is located on brake pedal bracket. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Connect a test light between ground and stoplight switch harness connector terminal "B" (Light Blue wire). If test light illuminates, go to step  16. If test light does not illuminate, go to step  22.
  11. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect TCC/brake switch 4-pin harness connector. TCC/brake switch is located on brake pedal bracket. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Connect a test light between ground and TCC/brake switch harness connector terminal "D" (Purple wire). If test light illuminates, go to step  18. If test light does not illuminate, go to step  23.
  12. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect CPP switch 4-pin harness connector. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Connect a test light between ground and cruise control clutch switch harness connector terminal "C" (Gray wire). If test light illuminates, go to step  20. If test light does not illuminate, go to step  24.
  13. Inspect Purple wire for an open, high resistance, short to ground, or short to voltage between instrument panel fuse block and multifunction lever switch harness connector terminal "L". See Fig 1. If an open, high resistance, short to ground or short to voltage is not found, go to step  28. If an open, high resistance, short to ground or short to voltage is found, repair Purple wire as necessary. After repair, go to step  35.
  14. Inspect Dark Blue wire for an open, high resistance, short to ground or short to voltage between Throttle Actuator Control (TAC) module harness connector terminal No. 8 and multifunction lever switch harness connector terminal "K". See Fig 1. If an open, high resistance, short to ground or short to voltage is not found, go to step  28. If an open, high resistance, short to ground or short to voltage is found, repair Dark Blue wire as necessary. After repair, go to step  35.
  15. Inspect Gray/Black wire for an open, high resistance, short to ground or short to voltage between TAC module harness connector terminal No. 21 and multifunction lever switch harness connector terminal "J". See Fig 1. If an open, high resistance, short to ground or short to voltage is not found, go to step  28. If an open, high resistance, short to ground or short to voltage is found, repair Gray/Black wire as necessary. After repair, go to step  35.
  16. Inspect Light Blue wire for an open, high resistance, short to ground or short to voltage between TAC module harness connector terminal No. 9 and stoplight switch harness connector terminal "B". If an open, high resistance, short to ground or short to voltage is not found, go to next step. If an open, high resistance, short to ground or short to voltage is found, repair Light Blue wire as necessary. After repair, go to step  35.
  17. Inspect stoplight switch for proper adjustment. If adjustment is not necessary, go to step  25. If adjustment is necessary, see CRUISE CONTROL RELEASE SWITCH, STOPLIGHT SWITCH & TORQUE CONVERTER CLUTCH/BRAKE SWITCH  under ADJUSTMENTS. Go to step  35.
  18. Inspect Purple wire for an open, high resistance, short to ground or short to voltage between ground and TCC/brake switch harness connector terminal "D". If an open, high resistance, short to ground or short to voltage is not found, go to next step. If an open, high resistance, short to ground or short to voltage is found, repair Purple wire as necessary. After repair, go to step  35.
  19. Inspect TCC/brake switch for proper adjustment. If adjustment is not necessary, go to step  26. If adjustment is necessary, see CRUISE CONTROL RELEASE SWITCH, STOPLIGHT SWITCH & TORQUE CONVERTER CLUTCH/BRAKE SWITCH  under ADJUSTMENTS. After repair, go to step  35.
  20. Inspect Gray wire for an open, high resistance, short to ground or short to voltage between Powertrain Control Module (PCM) harness connector C2 terminal No. 18 and CPP switch harness connector terminal "C". If an open, high resistance, short to ground or short to voltage is not found, go to step  27. If an open, high resistance, short to ground or short to voltage is found, repair Gray wire as necessary. After repair, go to step  35.
  21. Repair open, high resistance or short to ground in Pink wire between bottom underhood fuse block and multifunction lever switch. After repair, go to step  35.
  22. Repair open, high resistance or short to ground in Pink wire between bottom underhood fuse block and stoplight switch terminal "C". After repair, go to step  35.
  23. Repair open, high resistance or short to ground Pink wire between bottom underhood fuse block and TCC/brake switch. After repair, go to step  35.
  24. Repair open, high resistance or short to ground in Gray wire between PCM and cruise control clutch switch. After repair, go to step  35.
  25. Inspect stoplight switch harness connector for poor connections. If poor connections are not found, go to step  30. If poor connections are found, repair stoplight switch harness connector as necessary. After repair, go to step  35.
  26. Inspect TCC/brake switch harness connector for poor connections. If poor connections are not found, go to step  31. If poor connections are found, repair TCC/brake switch harness connector as necessary. After repair, go to step  35.
  27. Inspect CPP switch harness connector for poor connections. If poor connections are not found, go to step  32. If poor connections are found, repair CPP switch harness connector as necessary. After repair, go to step  35.
  28. Inspect multifunction lever switch harness connector for poor connections. If poor connections are not found, go to step  33. If poor connections are found, repair multifunction switch harness connector as necessary. After repair, go to step  35.
  29. Inspect PCM harness connector for poor connections. If poor connections are not found, go to step  34. If poor connections are found, repair PCM harness connector as necessary. After repair, go to step  35.
  30. Replace stoplight switch. After repair, go to step  35.
  31. Replace TCC/brake switch. After repair, go to step  35.
  32. Replace CPP switch. After repair, go to step  35.
  33. Replace multifunction lever switch. After repair, go to step  35.
  34. Replace PCM. Program PCM. See POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE  under PROGRAMMING. After repair, go to next step.
  35. Operate system to verify repair. If cruise control system is not operating properly, repeat test beginning at step  2.
