DTC P0704: Cruise Control Clutch Switch Malfunction: Testing

  1. If diagnostic system check has been performed, go to next step. If diagnostic system check has not been performed, perform CRUISE CONTROL DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
  2. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. On 3.8L engines, disconnect Powertrain Control Module (PCM) 80-pin Clear harness connector C2. On 5.7L engines, disconnect PCM 80-pin Blue harness connector. PCM is located right side of engine compartment, near rear of wheelwell. On 3.8L engines, connect a test light between ground and PCM harness connector C2 terminal No. 18 (Gray wire). See Figure. On 5.7L engines, connect a test light between ground and PCM harness connector C1 terminal No. 32 (Gray wire). On all models, if test light illuminates, go to next step. If test light does not illuminate, go to step  4.
  3. Ensure test light is still connected to PCM harness connector. Depress clutch pedal and observe test light. If test light illuminates, go to step  6. If test light does not illuminate, go to step  9.
  4. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect Clutch Pedal Position (CPP) switch 4-pin harness connector. CPP switch is located on clutch pedal bracket. See Figure. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Connect a test light between ground and CPP switch harness connector terminal "C" (Gray wire). If test light illuminates, go to next step. If test light does not illuminate, go to step  7.
  5. Inspect Gray wire for an open, high resistance or short to ground between ground and CPP switch harness connector terminal "C". If an open, high resistance or short to ground is not found, go to step  8. If an open, high resistance or short to ground is found, repair Gray wire as necessary. After repair, go to step  12.
  6. Inspect Gray wire for a short to voltage between PCM and CPP switch harness connector terminal "C". If a short to voltage is not found, go to step  8. If a short to voltage is found, repair Gray wire as necessary. After repair, go to step  12.
  7. Repair open, high resistance or short to ground in Gray wire between CPP switch and PCM or ground. Ground point is located on front of engine above A/C clutch harness connector, behind power steering pump pulley. After repair, go to step  12.
  8. Inspect CPP switch harness connector for poor connections. If poor connections are not found, go to step  10. If poor connections are found, repair CPP switch harness connector as necessary. After repair, go to step  12.
  9. Inspect PCM harness connector for poor connections. If poor connections are not found, go to step  11. If poor connections are found, repair PCM harness connector as necessary. After repair, go to step  12.
  10. Replace cruise control clutch switch. After repair, go to step  12.
  11. Replace PCM. Program PCM. See POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE  under PROGRAMMING. After repair, go to next step.
  12. Using scan tool, clear DTCs. Operate vehicle within conditions for running DTC. If DTC resets, repeat test beginning at step  2.
