Cruise Control (3.8L Engine)
Cruise control system maintains a desired vehicle speed under normal driving conditions. Steep grades may cause variations in selected speeds. System has capabilities to CRUISE, COAST, RESUME, ACCELERATE and TAP-UP or TAP-DOWN. Vehicle is equipped with Electronic Throttle Control (ETC). Main components of system include Throttle Actuator Control (TAC) module, Throttle Actuator, cruise control switches, stoplight switch assembly, cruise control release switch, Torque Converter Clutch (TCC)/brake switch if equipped with automatic transmission, or cruise control clutch switch if equipped with manual transmission. Cruise control system uses TAC module to maintain desired speed and operation. TAC module and Powertrain Control Module (PCM) communicate together to vary throttle opening in each cruise control mode. PCM monitors vehicle speeds through Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS). Cruise control will automatically cancel if vehicle speed is below 25 MPH. When cruise control switch is in ON position, PCM sends a message over a class 2 serial data circuit to Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) to illuminate cruise control indicator, if equipped. PCM will disengage cruise control when vehicle speed is less than 25 MPH, transmission gearshift selector is in Park, Reverse, Neutral or 1st gear positions, low engine RPM, high engine RPM, an over or under charged battery voltage condition exists or Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) is active for 2 seconds or more. On Camaro, Acceleration Slip Regulation (ASR) System is optional equipment. On Firebird, Traction Control System (TCS) is optional equipment. If vehicle is equipped with ASR or TCS, cruise control will disengage during low traction conditions.
