Test B : Engine Oil Pressure Gauge Inaccurate/Inoperative
NOTE:
Prior to performing following test, ensure engine oil level is correct and engine develops adequate oil pressure.
- If instrument cluster diagnostic system check has been performed, go to next step. If instrument cluster diagnostic system check has not been performed, perform instrument cluster diagnostic system check. See INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
- Verify system operation. Start engine. Observe engine oil pressure gauge in Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC). If oil pressure is 10-70 psi (69-483 kPa), check for poor connections and intermittent conditions. See DIAGNOSING INTERMITTENTS . If oil pressure is not 10-70 psi (69-483 kPa), go to next step.
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect oil pressure sensor connector. Start engine. If oil pressure gauge is past 80 psi, go to next step. If oil pressure gauge is not past 80 psi, go to step 6 .
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Install a 3-amp fused jumper wire between oil pressure sensor Tan/White wire terminal at connector and a good ground. See Fig 1 . Turn ignition switch on. If oil pressure gauge stays at 0 psi, go to step 7 . If oil pressure gauge does not stay at 0 psi, go to next step.
- Test Tan/White wire for an open circuit or high resistance, or short to voltage between oil pressure sensor connector and IPC harness connector terminal B11. See Figure and Fig 1 . If no problem is found, go to step 9 . If problem is found, repair as necessary. After repair, go to step 12 .
- Test Tan/White wire for an short to ground between oil pressure sensor connector and IPC harness connector terminal B11. If problem is not found, go to step 10 . If problem is found, repair as necessary. After repair, go to step 12 .
- Test for an open circuit or high resistance, between oil pressure sensor case and engine block. Check for good continuity between block and sensor. If problem is not found, go to next step. If problem is found, repair as necessary. After repair, go to step 12 .
- Check for poor connection at oil pressure sensor harness connector. If problem is not found, go to step 10 . If problem is found, repair as necessary. After repair, go to step 12 .
- Check for poor connection at IPC harness connector terminal B11. See Figure . If problem is not found, go to step 11 . If problem is found, repair as necessary. After repair, go to step 12 .
- Replace engine oil pressure sensor. Oil pressure sensor is located at rear of engine. See Fig 2 . After repair, go to step 12 .
- Replace instrument cluster. See INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After repairs, go to next step.
- Connect all disconnected components. Check system for proper operation. If system operates properly, test is complete. If system does not operate properly, go to step 3 .
